Re: Not so easy
OK, some of you may have already heard but WE FINALLY HIT OUR 10 SECOND GOAL
I`ll try and catch up from where we left off, at the end of last season we burnt up 2 pushrods and after we took the engine apart it looked as if the bearings were hurting for oil, long story short the oil pump drive stripped out inside the pump itself. I seen them break but never this.
OK, I get the engine together about a week before the Mopar Nats, runs sweet, shifts sweet and to the rear wheel dyno we went. (591HP at the wheels) The RR ran like it was fuel injected. We show up at the Nats and on the 1st pass the damn thing is surging and missing.(11.17@124) If you stroll back up you`ll see on our 11.02 pass last year we were having the same problem. It felt like a fuel problem, so one thing led to another and the fuel filter came off. Looks orangey inside so we changed it, Cannon and Atwood said it looked like rust to them, it was hard to tell the grains were very fine.
We decided to pull the fuel line from the carb and run the pump to look at the fuel and holy sh!t was there rust, we changed the tank out and made another pass, this time with a fuel pressure gauge strapped to the hood. It ran better but we were still surging to the tune of 11.04@124, the fuel gauge was reading zero. We changed both fuel pumps out, pressure reg and drilled of the fuel tee in front of the Hemi and lined up for our last pass, she ran an 10.90@127.8 with several issues on the table and the air was at almost 3000ft. Were gonna re-group and make some changes for the fall. 10.66@130 is my guess by the end of the year in perfect air.
I just hope running the car for 1/2 hour in the driveway, going around the block testing the trans, 8 dyno pulls, and dragstrip pases with all that rust running through the engine (rings, skirts, clyinder walls) didn`t hurt things too bad. That tank looked brand new on the out-side and was rusted on the inside.
Hard to believe but i have no good pictures of the car? Here it is in my garage before the engine went in.

Re: Not so easy
Congrats on the 10. pass! When you say you swapped out the tank, do you carry a spare tank with you or did you buy a new one from a vender at the Nat's? Just curious.
