who was Otis?

Looking through some week related information I came across the name E G Otis (Elisha Graves Otis) & seeing that he had died this week in 1861 & what he had done to become famous, I thought Ahhh yes, that makes sense.
But without that prompt of what he did, does the name E G Otis mean anything to you? It's a surname you have with out doubt seen....But where?
Anyone else miss Q sheet magazine?

I think she shot her husband for putting it about and was subsequently lynched.

Its the subject of a song by Cole Porter, and my version by Brian Ferry no less is excellent emoticon

Otis was "the father" of modern lifts (or elevators) and you'll have seen the name as Otis is/was a major manufacturing brand.

What Otis actually invented was some kind of safety device or emergency brake that stops the passengers being jelly at the bottom of the shaft in the event of a cable failure. The invention therefore made Lifts a viable proposition.

Old sign once seen on an out-of-order elevator in a USA Hotel, "This Otis regrets it is unable to lift".

A mine of useless information!
