OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
just a thought due to sitting a city & guilds course for 6 months & passing ,then another Morse exam & does that person then have the right to look down on m3,m6 2e0 operators???
this the way amateurs radio is @ the moment?
so if i actually got round to sitting the foundation license & passed got a call etc,
why would a G operator or M0 think they are better than me???
why because iam supposed to be new to radio?
iam at the bottom of the pile because they judge the book by the cover?
well i am sorry but thats why ham radio is dying not content with trying to bring new blood in to the hobby but then alienating them???
Glad iam still a pirate on the friendly band?
OR IAM JUST CYNICAL

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
I was really keen to take the foundation course but after contacting the 3 clubs local to me, none can (will?) take a newbie on like myself! Not suprising if its not as popular now. Dont know if its like this everywhere or just round here.

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
Hi Guys, Im sorry but I cant say the same about the club I have just done my Foundation with, The tutors included G3s, M0s and they were all supportive and were keen to contact us once we got our call sign.
I intend on being a Grey Hat and will try to keep descent QSO's on all bands. The muppets are in a minority and its up to descent radio users like us to keep it that way. I hope I will find these old boys you mention will also be in a minority, I am keen to prove to them that their opinion of newbies are wrong aswell.

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
Hi Tony, let us know when you get your call and we'll meet up on a band somewhere Only one I cant access atm is 6m because the antennas full of water
Never really come accross any bad feeling on the radio at all tbh Keith. Odd comments now and again about etiquette, but very rare. Even when using 1.2KW as an M3 I've never had any other station make any comments, even when working the States on 20m, and a G4 cant be heard, oooppps! It appears to be fairly relaxed if I'm honest, I have been told off for using 11m methods, but I've generally ignored it as 11m etiquette is easily as good, if not better than most hams.
I dont very often use 2m, its just like local CB really, with posh handles I did have the following conversation recently on 2m SSB:
Calling from 144300 USB (2m SSB calling frequency)
Me - “CQ 2 CQ 2, hello CQ DX, Mike three fox bravo calling CQ 2 metres, please QSY 144350 for any possible contact”
Moved to 144350 USB
Me – “Hello CQ DX, Mike three fox bravo, standing by on this frequency and listening”
Other station – “Mike three fox bravo, this isn’t 11 metres you know”
Me – “Nooooooo, QRZ?”
Other station – “That’s not how we call on 2 metres”
Me – “Its how I call on 2 metres, QRZ?”
Other station – “That’s not right though, and you’re supposed to check if the frequency is clear first”
Me – “Mike three fox bravo returning, I did check frequency was clear before calling, I always do no matter what band I might be using, the calling method I use is clear, polite, it does not clog the calling channel and is working just fine for me, you’re the first person to ever even mention it, QRZ QRZ?”
Long pause
Me – “Hello CQ DX, Mike three fox bravo, standing by on this frequency and listening QRZ?”
Other station – “You CBers make me sick, come on here with your cornflake packet ticket and think you can do what you want. A lot of us have been on amateur radio for years and we have been using certain methods for years, why should we change to suit you? 2 metres is now nothing better than CB ever was, you’ve ruined it completely from the great amateur band it once was, AND you think you’re right!!”
Me – “OK, please tell me how to do it correctly then, QRZ?”
Nothing
Me – “QRZ?”
Me – “Hello CQ DX, Mike three fox bravo, standing by on this frequency and listening QRZ?”
Another station completely – “Don’t worry mate your call is fine, that bloke’s a knob”

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
i love the last bit dave,,,, lmao... dont worry mate that blokes a knob.. lmao i hope he was listening when that chap came back and said that....
thats the kind of attitude to expect from the older generation of hams, i think the attitude will change a bit in the future, but there is always going to be radio snobbery when you have diferent callsigns for diferent levels. the higher up are always going to look down their noses at the lowley M callsigns even some 2e callsigns i have heard talking down a M station(sad), i think there should be one level of callsign just to keep stuff on one level and save any " i'm better than you sort of thing"

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
Ye will do Dave, Obviously if we are acting like muppets on Ham then I dont blame them getting annoyed, but as usual all newbies will be tarred with the same brush as the bad guys.
I feel its up to us as descent radio operators to prove them wrong as I said earlier.
Probably these old boys that are scrutinising everything cant be enjoying the hobby and that is most important to me to enjoy my hobby, we get enough scrutinising in work we dont need it when we get home to our hobby.
And after all it is just a hobby not a way of life!!
Our Exam invigilator said to us all after we passed "you have earned your call sign use it with pride"
Coming off my soap box now
Take Care

Re: OLD BOY'S (ham operator's)
Have heard stories about sugardelta members being snobby but in all my years have always found that group very easy to talk to on the radio and most helpful, always a pleasure and always return qsl cards. I dont think it matters what club, call sign you have its always down to the individual, if they think they are better than you then they probably always have done even before radio.
At least its only the minority!
