Cluster for EC
An Echo Charlie cluster might be a good idea? What do you reckon?
There wouldnt be much activity on it for sure, but one of the issues with EC is the timing of stations, everyones is listening at different times and no-one is calling as they're not sure theres anyone there or any conditions to start with

Re: Cluster for EC
Done, we now have our own cluster site, of course its not quite cluster.dk, but on ours you can add any interesting spot you want, particularly 11m and EC.

Re: Cluster for EC
Nice job!
How about this:
Would it be of any interest to anyone to have a field available for TX power?
I'm just thinking that this would improve the overall picture regarding conditions, so maybe you could even go the full monty and indicate antenna style too?

Re: Cluster for EC
I'm going to do this, but in a different way. You will have log on usernames, probably QRZ, you profile will have the radio, aerial, power, mic, other equipment and location attached to your username This could be displayed each time, your location will be, maybe other individual details ?
Also I'm looking to put a chat box at the top like cluster DK, for discussing radio, what your listening to, who's around that kind of thing. Its a bit of a copy from CDK tbh, but it works
Its time though to put it all together, and I hate computers. Years ago, early-mid 90's when the internet was a baby and I was using win 311, I had about three websites, chat rooms, message boards (All a bit different now though) I used to write articals for a magazine, which eventually became websites etc.
I've built more than a dozen computers, I have put in 30+ machine networks, farted about with the horrible things for years. About two years ago I filled a skip with old computers and computer stuff. I said "thats it, no more computers, next time I'm going to PC world and buy the finished artical that does what it says on the tin"
Doh! Here I am three networked wireless machines and two netwroked Laptops, still poncing about with websites, still keeping me awake thinking about databases, still building websites and chat rooms etc etc. Oh well.

Re: Cluster for EC
But it keeps the old brain active, doesn't it?
Pity I didn't come across your skip when you chucked out the old stuff as I'm always on the scrounge for computer components and would have emptied it for you! (probably would have been divorced by now though...)
I built and installed a computer for each of the kids out of old stuff - mainly approx. 500MHz speed processors and 2 gig hard drives, and they do occasionally fail but it's pretty rare - the older drives do seem to be more reliable. I suppose they've stood the test of time.
Smallest is a 133 I use just to bung on to check my e-mails if I'm not switching on 'the big one'.

Re: Cluster for EC
Too slow Jim, I reckon, worth a try I suppose. Its not the connection speed, or hardware, although you might need a USB port? Its the software that you'll want to run. I bet even the win '98 you've got on it runs slow without any applications?

Re: Cluster for EC
Depends on the abount of RAM fitted really. The slower processors need all the help they can get, but you may find the motherboard won't recognise a lot of RAM. 64Mb may be the lot unless you're lucky - that's pretty much what this one uses and it's quite useable, although waiting for Firefox to load can be tiresome.
I'd suggest that computer would run fine for the apps you mention, although if a USB port is needed (rather than a comm port) you may have to fit a USB expansion card.
Give it a try - if the software is more than a few years old I doubt there'd be any problems. Don't load XP on it...

Re: Cluster for EC
But I don't understand the need to run XP. that OS requires a lot of memory and HDD space just to run itself. Being a bit of a die-hard '98 fan, I reckon that's what you should use.
Less than 200Mb of HDD space, and will be fine with 64Mb of RAM.
But whatever you decide to do, have fun!
