Callsigns
Hi all,
Forgive me for what might seem an obvious question but is a freebanding call sign 'made up' as in the old CB days? Is there a suggested/mandatory format by area i.e. **/XXX/** (digits/letters/digits)
Or is this allocated somehow (so as not to duplicate) as with the foundation Amateur licence?
An ex 1980's CBer, I decided to return and have purchased a 200GTL DX.......
Thanks
Dan

Re: Callsigns
Hi Dan, yes, the first numbers are your prefix -163-Wales, 26-England, then the group name, FB for ours and finally your number, you can have any number that is available. If you send Dave-Yamanx an email he will sort you out with one.

Re: Callsigns
Hi 9447. You can make up your own DX Call Sign if you want and yes it would usually be made up of “Digits Letters Digits”.
The first set of digits would represent What Country you are from (your QTH) this is known as your ”Division Number” (each country has one) England is 26. The letters represent the “DX Club/Group” you belong to “FB” being this Group (FoxTrot Bravo) the last set of numbers Identifies you within the Group.
Why not put in a request here it’s free and I’m sure Dave will allocate you your Call in Know time!!!
Anyway hope this as helped

Re: Callsigns
Thanks,
I'm beginning to feel at home already....
Pleased too, as I have built this 'CB' thing up so much for my kids over the last few weeks, trying to get them on side (leverage with the Mrs ;-) )and they are ITCHING to speak to someone.......I was thinking they wouldn't be impressed what with the internet and MSN etc.....but they are as excited as I am to be returning. 25yrs is a long time away & I feel like a new boy at school.

Re: Callsigns
Hi Dan, Welcome to the forum, ask all the questions you need to, someone will be able to help.
The first part of the call sign, the first two digits is not simply made up, it is a recognised country division number which has been agreed around the world, in my case the division will always be 68 as I am in Northern Ireland. This will always go in front of the letters.
If you look on the main Foxtrot Bravo page you will see a menu with a link to a page with a list of all the divisions, there is about 343 of them the last time I looked.
You will get to know the more common ones eventually without having to look at the page, for instance 26 is England, 1 is Italy, 14 is France etc.
The second part of the call sign can be made up and the third part which is usually digits also can, however the majority of people join a DX group like this one (Foxtrot Bravo) then you can use the FB call sign, the digits after the phonetics usually reflect when you joined the group, so for instance Dave in England who is one of the founding members of the group will have a call sign of 26-Foxtrot-Bravo-001, in other cases you might be able to choose any number which is available as the last digits.
There is no link in any way to the allocated amateur radio call signs.
Clear as mud maybe! anyway enjoy the site and welcome back to radio. 73s
