cheap ssb rig..........

ok so i went and got a rig a few days ago before i had read the guide on this forum.

after seeing the pics of the radios im not so sure its up to the job properly.

try not to laugh, its a tristar 747......

i thought id get a cheapy just to see what freebanding is all about first( mistake probably).

anyway so one of my many questions is, will it cover most/all of the band i need? i know it can do the calling channel ok, not so sure what else if any.

also i did read that the fm side of the radio will be jumbled up, the channels wont go 1-40 in the normal uk order is that right?

anyone know what power it should put out i cant find it on the net anywere??

sorry to chuck so many questions at you at once guys, im a total noob eger to learn. emoticon

The Tristar 747 will do nicely for your first SSB radio. 27555 calling channel is on USB and channel 12 hi or channel 52. You may not hear too much activity on there atm as there is little in the way of propagation, skip, but keep your ears peeled as when the prop does happen there'll be a lot of activity, I hope that some time this weekend we will have some good conditions emoticon

You should have an swr meter? To make sure your aerial is tuned correctly? What aerial are you using?

 thanks for the info.

i do have a swr meter, but im only using a antenna in the loft at the min. its a very old siro mounted on a washing machine panel lol. works ok ish for local cb.

was thinking of getting a 3/8 silver rod for now. only thing is ive got those nosie neighbours that just have no life and like to complain about everything. i do have a 20ft conifer tree in my garden and was thinking of hiding it in there, sorta straped to the trunk but poking out the top.....would that work ok or would the tree block it to much?

my plan is to buy a old 110 size landy, and mount something on the roof of that for weekend fun, maybe a tank whip something like that. theres a nice big hill near me were you can see 4 countys so im told emoticon

Inside a tree is fine, providing none of the actual aerial itself is in contact with any vegitation emoticon Which may be difficult but not impossible emoticon

get yourself a 9 foot whip on a big spring and bung it on the landy.

you might have tuning problems if you put the 5/8ths up in the tree though - just get an Antron99, they are pretty much non sus and wont fall down in the wind - leave it till tuesday though - looks like we have a big gale coming monday!

If it Aint broke, don't fix it, and if you do, don't tell anyone you touched it
