aerials in the loft???
Hi all, I want to use my 3900 as a homebase on SSB but will have to put ant in loft as private landlord wont allow outside aerial. any advice such as use a Signal Keeper or DV27 on Biscuit Tin?

hi tony, i have been using a 1/4 wave Sirio boomerang in my loft as i cant put outside antennas up. You could easy build your own 1/4 wave vertical though out of wire. ive just built a inverted V also that is fixed to the apex of the roof, no good for FM groundwave but it recieves skip well, not sure on transmit as i havnt tried it much i'm always out in the mobile. check out these couple of links

a wire vertical will probably be better than a dv27 as you can make it a full 1/4wave long, plus you made it yourself so when you get that dx contact theres more satisfaction

But whatever vertical you decide upon, don't mount it on a biscuit tin!
This style of antenna needs a good ground plane to work well, and this can be constructed in your loft pretty easily by running a wire from the centre of the loft space to each of the four corners, on the floor. Connect them electrically in the middle where they meet, and this will go to the outer of the coax.
The vertical element is a bit simpler, but will require a lot of up & down before you get the tuning correct. I doubt there will be enough height for a full quarter wave (8'6" ish), so you will need to coil the wire up loosly to shorten its physical length.
Personally I'd go for the inverted 'V' as it is simpler, and in certain circumstances a better performer.
