UK40 FM vs SSB

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this but as a SSB newbie could you clear this up for me ?

On 19 fm i can hear locals really well .... On 27.555 usb the same local sounds miles away , but blokes in Germany, Italy, France etc. bang over ...

Is this normal, i know the local signal kind of goes in a straight line, and the ssb is going up and bouncing around the atmosphere.

Is me rig crap or is this normal ?

cheers

Re: UK40 FM vs SSB

Well, nearest local to me is about 7 miles away and I can hear him much better on SSB than FM, not sure if its the difference in power, about 10watts FM vs about 25watts SSB- or the different ways the 2 work. Saying that, I have had contacts abroad with 4watts on FM years ago. Thats not a lot of help to you I know but am sure someone can answer your question on here. Dont know where your from but have you tried the net on a Sunday?

depends on conditions & propagation really if a euro station is coming in via the ionosphere
5x9+ u an it going to hear nobody in the uk.
but if your up a hill no propagation u will work most of uk.if there is anybody out there to talk to(does help)??
am /fm transmission's are via a carrier & ssb transmissions are via audio to keep it simple.

not a big expert or anything but this station works better on ssb than on ukfm, i can speak to mobile fm stations about 10 miles max[if they are actually mobile-driving along] and about 15 miles to another base station similar to mine, on ssb however if prop is down and all quite the ssb easily doubles that distance, hope that helps a bit? hope to speak soon, kirk, ps what is your rough qrt?

same for me, i can hear people further away on ssb than fm(groundwave). it might not be a problem your end of the radio, it might be the other person you were talkin to. there radio might be low power on ssb unless it was every local station you spoke to, and then i would say it was maybe a problem with your radio??? you need to test it out speaking to a few stations around you on ssb and fm just to se if its your end or theres
