dont expect DX overload as cycle 24 did indeed not happen, and you will NOT hear anything in the near future.
10,11,12metres will be dead for a couple of years at least, you could consider selling your rig (good rig by the way) and getting a HF rig where you will hear PLENTY of good dx, on 20 and 40 metres all day, there are pirate bands that may be busy "ish" too. do your foundation license, then you can dx all day, today i was talking into israel on 2 watts while i was on the M42 in my truck, its that easy!!

well call me an optomist, but 11M is starting to open up, there has been a couple of hours each night of south america on my radio every night for the last week. We've had 4 years of solar minimum, it can't last forever, it's already twice as long as a "usual" solar minimum, so things can only get better 
Granted I wouldn't expect constant prop on 11M for the next couple of years, but even at solar maximum you are never guarenteed conditions, although it is more likely. I totally agree about buying an HF set, it gives you more bands to play with, but I wouldn't be writing of the higher HF bands totaly.
Cycle 24 is happening, it's happening now! It's got off to a late and slow start, but we have sunspots now which are members of Cycle 24, and we can only get more. You can't say Cycle 24 didn't happen, it's only just beginning !
As for working Isreal on 2W on an Amateur band, does that not feel like shooting fish in a barrel? Takes all of the fun out of it for me if it's that easy

i tend to agree, i moniter 555 for hours on and off only to hear static! i know my station is "ok" as i still have qsos with fairly distant stations on groundwave, ie fb117 over at march, i do realise that i "miss" the dxwhen it comes in as i have left for home by then, when conditions were better this summer i managed nearly all of europe with a mobile setup very similar to yours, in fact i had several qsos into britain FROM germany and denmark with a 40 channel cb rig with 4 watts!, i think you are just unlucky with your timing!. i have taken the plunge and own a hf radio but so far not used it anywhere other than 11 meters, the thought of being able to qso israel ect with two watts with no problem does not appeal-might as well use a mobile phone if its that easy![just my opinion!] keep trying and i am sure you will get results.....

no, echolink is like using a mobile phone!! as for working israel on 2w, its great. whats the difference between that and israel on 2w on 11 metres? nothing its a DX contact... 10 metres is also dead, thats why no-one is using it now. i think "november golf 33" actually wants to work some DX and not sit there 14hrs a day waiting for any sign of life that may or may not occur,on that basis israel on 2w is a buzz and so was indonesia from my shed the other night(no-one was whistling over us, shouting hola hola coca cola)and we were both "on frequency" LOL
PS, NASA announced that cycle 24 did not materialise as predicted. i reckon they know a thing or two about astronomy eh?

like i said just my opinion! i have thought about doing the foundation and it would be great to get some dx in when 11 metres is dead, just saying that it would all loose its appeal if 100% you could qso anywhere in the world with no effort whatsoever, plus i quite like the idea of being slightly out of bounds as far as legalities are concerned!

Its worth doing the foundation course, and the ham bands are great. BUT, and its a big but for me, I dont get the same buzz from 20, 40 80m etc. I just dont. I feel like the ops are a different bread, but mostly there the same guys (And thats happened more than once as well )
Difficult to explain, but most (Not all) but most 11m ops that have got involved in the ham thing have returned to 11m. Whioch is cool I use all the bands, and 11m is my personal favourite by a long chalk.
I'm hoping cycle 24 starts soon, I doubt if it wont begin at all, and the scientists concurr that its slow but will happen at some point
Its destined to be a lower area of propagation, the longer the quiet period goes on, but that just means less QRM from some of the EU stations
Good DX whatever band you use, 73's

back to the problem of not recieving any thing on ya radio check
1. your squelch is off on ssb
2. your rf gain is fully clockwise
3. as with any recevier is only good as its antenna.
so don't to hear austraila on a dx 27 or much else.
if you are hearing fm on your other radio you should hear it on the ranger.
has said 19 fm is 27.781.2 mhz usaully some body on there??
if still nothing get somebody to check it on their anteena before taking it to a specailist radio shop .

Hi guys all is now better. The radio went back to the bench an is now working properly. It appears that the rig went through a routine expansion prior to sale and a bit o f lose solder had caused an arc of some sort. all good now though i can at last hear people.
Million thanks to all who helped me. Now i have a new query ill post it as Burner confusion.
