hi all, i think that at some point i would like a beam, have seen a Sirio SY 27-3 or a Sirio SY 27-4, do you have to have a electronic rotator or can it be "fixed" in a certain position? any help on this subject would be great! thanks, kirk. emoticon

Hi Kirk, I fancy one myself, only place I could put mine up is right down the bottom of the garden and I have no electric down there so I would have to find a way of turning it by hand! Wouldnt know where to point it, would just be trial and error for the first few times. Really fancy one though!

i have the leccy but being the cheapskate that i am i was wondering if there were say 4 positions that it could be pointed ie n, e, s,and west. that way you could have some kind of locking peg arrangement pre set in those positions, i think that we need to consult our great leader dave!, i eventually want to get a "proper" hf set so i can get onto these echo charlie frequencies and i believe you need a wire antenna for that so i want to get it right first time! emoticon

Re: JIM BEAMS

get a dx locater and it will tell you the correct degrees for each country??
south/south eat will cover most of euroland,north/northeast will cover most of north america/west indies.
a wire dipole will do you on 45mtrs or a g5rv an a tuner will cover 0-30mhz ,but get a manual,as some auto's dont work out of the ham bands???
ps a lite weight rotater are £49.99 rrp.
sirio 3 ele £65
sirio 4 ele £69.00
a g5rv 1/2 size £25 full size does top band £29.99

I use the Sirio 4 element beam, they are extremely light weight and can easily be operated by a cheap TV rotator for about £35 from Ebay. Mounting it high is the problem, a similar problem for all antennas, I know but for a beam, they dont look so good stuck on your roof top. emoticon

I made the mast from two bits of ali about 5m each and some guy lines, works really well, but probably not quite high enough.

For EC and the HAM HF bands I use a full size G5RV, mounted north south, which, as I understand it, is the best compromise for direction. You will need a Antenna matcher (ATU) to work across all the bands, and as Keith said go for a manual one, I tuned my G5 specifically for 45m and I have it mounted in a sort of inverted V, not quite more of a squashed chinamans hat emoticon with the centre around 9m high, again it should be higher, but not easy to go 10-11m straight up. I was going to use the Beam mast, but because its ali, I have been advised this will affect its efficiency too much on both aerials.

The difference in size between the 3 and the four SY27 is not so much, the big difference is the narrowness of the directional bit. If you're not going to use a rotator (I advise you do though as its cheap) then the 3 element would probably suit as the more elements you have will give you a narrower angle.
