Which, Galaxy, Magnum or Superstar?

When ((if) house sale go's through, seat cover says I can buy a new RADIO. So been doing some Net Surfing and have narrowed it down to:

 (1) Galaxy DX95T
 (2) Magnum S9
 (3) Superstar SS-158DX

Now according to the Web pages bellow the spec is:

Galaxy: 25.165-28.755 480 Channels
Magnum: 25.165-29.695 320 Channels
Superstar: 24.265-29.655 480 Channels

http://www.cbradio.nl/galaxy/Galaxy%20_dx95t2.htm
http://www.cbradio.nl/magnum/frame_inhoud_magnum.htm
http://www.cbradio.nl/superstar/frames_superstar_158.htm

How can the "Magnum" have a greater frequence range yet have less channels than the "Galaxy"? and the Superstar have a greater frequence range than the "Galaxy" yet have the same number of Channels?

Please Helllllllllllp

not a big expert but my superstar 3900 has bands a b c d e f[i think from memory] and with its course/fine switch you can "split" channels so lots of channels but the thing is that so far all my dx work has been just "higher" or "lower" than 27555 so although i can reach down to 26 and up to 29 megs its all a bit pointless, it seems to me to be more important to be able to reach them in order[not to logical on my superstar at certain frequencys] and without a frequency counter any radio seems pretty useless[unless its built in] well i did my best! hope its helped?
ps my 3900/astatic mike/cheapskate 1/2 wave and kl500 seem to work great allthough i have nothing to compare them with if you see what i mean! sorry to ramble but have just sunk a few pints of the irish stuff!

Thanks UncleJessie, I understand what your saying as regards the lack of QSO's on the other frequences, but if the "Seat Covers" going to let me buy a new one lets go the Whole-Hog. emoticon

Yep, what he said more or less! I have only had a Lincoln-which I thought was brilliant, and the RCI I have now, which I think is better as dx is a lot harder nowdays at least I have 150watts out of the radio if I need it. I have been looking at the Icoms, Kenwwods, Yaesus-in no particular order and wish I had gone for something like that-more buttons for a start! Its all well and good having hundreds of chanels but if there is no-one else on them whats the point? Only ever use 27.555 and a few higher or a few lower now days. Let us know what you decide on as they are all good radios.

righty ho, ive never had any of the radios mentioned but have heard a little about them.

the galaxy would probably be my choice followed closely by the superstar, ive heard the magnum s9 buttons/knobs feel a bit plasticy and not very solid also someone told me theirs was a bit drifty and the audio on ssb sounded very clippy like they never had enough ooompf in the power supply.

Like i said i have never owned any of these three radios but have read a bit about them and very nearly bought a galaxy with the fans on the back(went for silly money on fleabay).

someone owned a superstar 158 on here and i think they were very happy with it, sold it to go HF. I dont think the magnum is all its hyped up to be, i could be wrong. I trawled the net tryin to find info on the magnum and always came back to the galaxy???

Hi TopBuzzUk, thanks for your input. I still think that the "Galazy" is the one for me.

See your from Stonehenge, I,ll give you a call on 555 when I get my shack up and running. This we have to be on my President Grant for now.

hello, i hae a ss-158edx so here is words on this radio- v good reports of tx audio on standard mike but not the one that came with it. i got fed up of re-soldering the mic plug. rx is good ,usb is quiet and sensitive. the roger beep and echo sounds ok if you like that sort of thing.there is no way of turning down the tx power so at 25w on usb your pushing you luck running a amp.
the controls all feel good and robust. built in swr is handy and seems to be accurate.i sometimes find the display to bright when driving at night, no dimmer . seem to always re tuning on the clarifier wont stay on frequeny, not a fault with my radio that how they are. so there you go + and - points. i probably would not buy another. i have been told by my rig doctor magnum parts are not easly avalable, if you have get fault it has to go back to magnum to be fixed.
regards tony fb150
