Yaesu FT-857D
I brought mine to use as a mobile, but have ended up using it as my main transceiver.
I have several other HF radios, including a Kenwood, a couple of other Yaesu's & a Trio & this 857 is a terrific little radio when compared to any of them.
I brought this radio opened up & I'm not sure of exactly what the band coverage is, but it certainly covers well outside of the 1.8 - 30 MHz HF limits & works sufficiently out of band to run 446 as well.
Power output is 100 watts on HF & 6 meters, 50 watts on VHF & 20 watts on UHF.
Modulation reports have always been good, the in built SWR meter is a bonus & I love playing around with the screen colour settings etc.
These radios can easily be picked up second-hand for £300 & thus represent excellent value for money.
And before anyone starts talking about the small meters, well an add on larger meter is available from LDG & it looks great, & the menu is simple to use once you have played with it a bit & if you have an IQ above your shoe size it should prove to be simple.
I would also add that once set, there is no real reason to touch the menu again unless you like playing with it or are re-programming something like the memory channels & this can be done with the handbook in one hand & thus be made simple.

Re: Yaesu FT-857D
nice one crimso.dont have to do a write up now as youve covered it well.
picked mine up recently wondering whether i sould have sold my lincoln (exelent 11 meter set)or not.not yet opened up as waiting for cat cable(no need for the screwdrivers with a cat programmer)
1st impression was how quiet yet sensitive the rx is.
2nd was how strong adj frequency rejection was.550/560 was previously a no go zone on big skip days.
cant wait to test this thoughourly but no regrets so far.i have so much more diversity at my beakon call with this set.
