Solarcon A99 (Antron)

A99

Image

The original Solarcon A99 fibregalss antenna from the USA (previously known as the Antron 99).

Our most popular higher priced antenna.

Very easy to erect, it comes in 3 sections which simply screw together. No screws or jubilee clips etc required.

Easy to swr - in most cases no adjustment is required, but if needed all you have to do is turn the tuning rings at the base of the antenna. Once in position simply lock the 2 rings together.

All 3 sections are also available as spare parts.

Please note that the brackets supplied wit this antenna will only fit 1.25" diameter pole. If you wish to mount it on a larger pole (eg scaffolding) then you need to buy larger brackets with the antenna (2 x F25).

Weight: 2000.00 g

a length of copper wire (in a fibreglass tube) bizzare. a £20 5/8 wave with radials will work loads better...

The 99 is a 5/8 wave antenna.
Agreed there is a simple copper wire running up the tube but really that's all that's required at that point.

Most of the 'clever stuff' goes on at the bottom - the impedance matching components. This is where these designs live or die - I can only assume the 99 lives because it's well made, but I don't own one so can't say. emoticon

i had one up for ages, i still think my 5/8 with radials worked better for dx and cost £30 less!!
(by the way the A99 is a half wave)!!

No it isn't, its a shunt fed half wave.

There is nothing clever that goes on inside an A99, most of them are not even soldered together properly. The coil is poorly designed and very lossey. As for the claimed 9.9 dB gain, lmao, if you get a good one thats actually been soldered inside you'll still be lucky to get 0dBd gain, put up a centre fed vetical dipole alongside an A99 and I guarentee you the dipole will perform better.

Re: Solarcon A99 (Antron)

granted its not the best aerial money can buy but after all it is a "CB" aerial designed for use in america where its main goal was to cope with strong winds, and it does that well, i worked allover the world on one on 11 metres as a teenager so they cant be all that bad, is it really worth slating it so much?

not sure when you were a teenager but when i was 12 in 92 you could work stateside on a pube, not that i had any back then....point is that if prop is on,its on.many a true story heard of working anything on mag mount and buiscuit tin lid back then were true.
i woluld never deny anyones experience,s of any particular antenna but as a review forum ive found mine worse than my 1/4 wave mobile whip.
i chose mine to be a simple 3 section, easy up portable dx antenna capable of out performing my wilson 5000 on decent dx days hiltop mobile.back to back using an ant swither with the a99 up 30foot higher on a pole both with an swr of 1.2 for each.the wilson pissed on it by at least 2 s points.
for less money,a silver rod will equall an a99 but the 99 will outlast most others.
