Re: 2 meter mobile antenna?
Unlikely Paddy, probably repeaters. You can work Australia through repeaters
I've used several 2m mobiles, the best I've had is the Diamond (?) cant remember the mosdel I'll dig it out, still got yhe packet somewhere buts its a centre loaded whip dual bander. Works as far as any 2m mobile would when driving

Wooohoo!
Sorry to be flippant but VHF just doesn't do it for me. I've done some SOTA stuff and can get better distance with a CB radio than a 2m set. (When I get a coherant response, which is rare on 27/81 )
I know stations who work EU on 2m SSB with 12 ele beams etc. But thats far too much effort for such small return in my book. Also, and absolutely no offence meant here to those who are into it, but 2m ops are a breed amoungst themselves, some of them truly sound like quintscential amateur radio people, like trainspoter type staticatto squeaky voices
And repeaters? Thats not DX is it? Echo link and other internet based "radio" for 2m doesn't count as DX surely? I know its another aspect to the hobby, and good luck to all who are into it, not me, I have had a play, rented the tee shirt for a while and tried it, but not quite the same as 23 division on 27385 LSB with ESSB audio on a Saturday afternoon, now thats a buzz

Re: 2 meter mobile antenna?
your absolutely right about vhf/uhf, not a dx thing.
and as for speaking to VK through internet based links is a poinless exersize, the same as people who use 1.5kw on HF, you may aswel call them on the house phone!!
