Brent's Bamboo Quad (The BBQ) - how to build a cheap, lightweight dx quad
1,saw the head off a 5/8 threaded bolt.i used a grinder for the other 7 lol.
2,8 of 5/8 threaded quick relase whipmounts from truckking.the most expensive part of ther build at 23 quid
3.
4,25mil box section ali 1.3meters long for the boom.this length should be 1.7meters for max gain but i got this from a scrap yard.i did purchase some box ali long enough but its wall thickness meant it too heavy.gain differences are negligable anyway
5.
6,making 1 of 8 bamboo spreadders
7.a packet of bamboo cost about 3 quid, each spreadder is about 2 meters long so i got 2.4 meter pack and seleted 8 of the straightest lenghs.we will trim off the exess after the elements have been fitted.so here i am preparing the thick end for the boom.
8.
9,no more nails
10.
11. leave over night
12,colour code the reflector element spreadders blue
13,driver end of the boom.for the wire elements i stripped out the live and neutral from a household 12 meter extension cable and discarded the yellow /green earth
14,reflector end of the boom.obviously the blue/neutral wire is used this end
15,2 tee brackets, bolted through the boom onto a footlong brush handle, ducktapped to the exact internal diameter of my 10 foot pole.or can be u bolted to any mast
16,screwed loops on 3 spredders for the element to pass through
17,connector block, drilled, screwed and zip tied on 1 spredder.this is to adjust tension in the refector element.i also ran out of blue tape LOL
18,the blue reflector spreaders together ready for boom
19,the technical bit.this is the feedpoint of the driven element.its impedence is around 115 ohms.our coax is 50 ohms so to match/convert the feedpoint imp,i coiled a 1/4 wavelenght(9 feet)of 75 ohm brown TV coax(do not use 50ohm radio stuff) up the spredder arm to...
20,....to the mount end.where i soldered a female pl plug, drilled out a medicine bottle top,and taped it to the spredder arm.
21,i tried various impedence convertors/baluns/gamma matches .this method, whilst not the best looking produced a 1.5 swr without any lengthening/shorterning of the driver wire and i tidied it up by getting more brown tape, brown tv coax and neater windings
All calculations were from

It's big though - I'm wondering how it will be received by the neighbours??
I'm slowly sorting out a vertical for 45, I'll have to post my adventures with that one day.

Hi Brent, wow thats cool! If I made one of them, it would break, most of the things I make have a habit of breaking. Have you had a chance to try it out yet, how does it perform? When you on next with it?
