Ferrite clamps-where to put them?

Heard a lot about these but where do they go? I have a feeling you can put one on mic lead and one on aerial cable but does it matter which end they go? Am trying to get rid of, or cut down on TVI, have got swr right down but still have a problem. They are cheap enough to buy but I dont know what or how they work! Seem to small to do anything to me, but hey, what do I know!!!
Thanks
Al

i dont know about tvi but ferrite chokes clip-on or hoop are good for reducing RF feedback. i have one on the plug end of my mic in the mobile(wrapped round twice(clip-on), this stopped me getting a carrier on SSB when using a power mic. I also put one on the coax close to plug end, one on the extension speaker(plug end)and one on the power cable close to supply. like i said i dont think they would help much with tvi, a low pass filter would be better and not a crappy CB one, a propper ham one would work 99% better emoticon

Thanks for that Paddy, I think I sorted it now, put my aerial up a lot higher, found a few ferrite thingies on some old hi fi stuff, put a new mic on and no tvi so far! Dont know what cured it but it seems to have gone now. Who cares now, problem solved!!!
Well at least on MY stuff, neibours may tell me different tomorow?

probably putting the antenna up higher solved that, got it up out the way. i have 2 TV antennas in the loft, 1 for downstairs and 1 for up. i wipe out the TV downstairs but only get the odd line on the upstairs 1(100-200watts). the TV antennas are right next to each other, cant wait to move somewhere i can put outdoor antenna emoticon

Just to complicate matters, TVI may not be coming down the antenna line, or be related to harmonics. This kind of TVI tends to cause patterning on the screen, especially with an unmodulated carrier.

Sometimes, the close proximity of the TV can cause varying changes in the DC bias conditions of the internals of the TV circuitry, causing the picture to flutter as you speak. In severe cases you may even hear SSB audio (as you'd hear in AM mode) coming out of the speaker.

Unfortunately, if this is the problem the only real cure may be to reduce power, or get a better TV, although as the RF may be finding its way into the TV via the coax, winding the TV end of the coax a few times around a ferrite core will reduce this by blocking that entry route.

i will try a ferrite on the tv coax, may even buy a filter to go inline. i dont get the problem when i switch my boosters off but i lose a few channels and the missis watches them, lol. are the plug in filters any good that go on the tv coax?

Yes that is ideal, may not solve your problem though but its the best place to start, if you keep getting the issue of interference, I'll try and help you solve it, but it may be you wont unfortunately, unless you buy your neighbour a new set emoticon

Thanks Dave, I think! will try a filter first. Will pop round and see what sort of tv she has, at least she came and seen me about it and not moaned about it behind my back, now at least we can sort something out. I hope! Will be next week now before I can try a filter, dont think there is anywhere local I can pick one up. Will keep you posted.
