Review----------------------------------
Star Fox for the original SNES was THE first game to ever have the Super FX chip. Any game cartridge with this baby inside would display wondrous features from special effects to polygons in a 16-bit system! This game was supposed to be a test for the Super FX chip, but when they released this game into the public, it became a smash hit! I really love this game a lot and I think it deserves more attention and fans than its N64 counterpart, Star Fox 64. After all, this IS a classic, and quite frankly more fame should rain down on this masterpiece!
Story 10/10
The game of Star Fox takes place in a distant galaxy called the Lylat System, where our heroes, the Star Fox team fight their way throughout the galaxy on their Arwings, shooting away at enemy star fighters sent by the Evil emperor Andross. But here's the catch! The emperor has placed many traps on the other planets leading to the wasteland planet Venom, the fiend’s home planet. If that isn't enough, there are giant aircraft and ships just waiting to blast the Star Fox team to smithereens.
The main guy, err... fox, Fox McCloud from the planet Corneria, is the young leader of the Star Fox team who avenges his father's death with his three teammates. From the wise Peppy Hare, to the positive Slippy Toad, to the skilled and surly Falco Lombardi, they all join his side to take on the evils of Venom and attempt to destroy Andross for the good of all the people in the galaxy.... Sounds interesting, right? Let's move on!
Graphics 10/10
If you thought you were expecting a game with 2D graphics, you were wrong... Dead wrong! You, my friend, are playing a flight-sim game with polygons all over the screen! I have heard many bad things about this game's poor graphics, I simply could not agree with these rants. The graphics are actually very good, considering that these are polygons in a SNES system! The backgrounds are also intriguing - a good feast for the eyes. Backgrounds range from a starry galaxy, to the mountains of Corneria, to the caves of Macbeth. I don't CARE about the lack of colors on the polygons in the game; they are still pretty excellent!
Controls 9/10
A lot of people do not really like the controls in this game. It just takes time, really. But, if you want be do well in this game, you'd better get used to these! The moves are quite simple, too: Shoot lasers, fire retros (the brakes), the boost, and of course, your best buds, the nova bombs and the barrel roll. The barrel roll is quite effective, just tap the L/R buttons twice. Not only can you reach distances quickly, but you can also deflect almost any enemy fire! Try this: shoot and move using the barrel roll. Can’t get past the tougher levels without this simple combo. Moving on, now.
Sounds, Voice, and Music 10/10
Ah... You gotta love the audio in this game! The sounds are quite excellent to hear. In fact, they fit just like a glove, no matter what planet you're on. Even the Star Fox team make some pretty decent noises. Though they are mere blips and whatnot, they will at least put a smile on your face. Well, that depends on who you are!
Voice wise, well... I didn't hear much, and they're still okay. You can hear phrases from the emergency call to the voices at the end of the game. These voices could do better, but no other Star Fox game has better voice acting than Star Fox Adventures.
The music is weird... but in a good way! The music is by far, the best music I have ever heard in a Star Fox game! The tunes fit pretty darn well, wherever you go. From the funky, upbeat music on Fortuna, to the thrilling songs on the planet Venom, the music will just make you play this game even more... Sorry, Star Fox 64, better luck next time.
Objectives and the Starting of the Game
What you do in this game is to fight your way throughout the Lylat System by shooting enemy aircraft to oblivion sent by Andross. Of course, you must destroy the fiend, too, while performing this not-so easy task.
You first have two options: Training, and the actual Game. There are also 4 control types to choose from. You’ll also see an Arwing on the screen, and you can move it around for control testing.
Training mode lets you fly through rings and with your wingmen. You only need to fly through 10-15 rings to pass the test. If you can fly through the 15 rings at the beginning of the training, you can fly through as many as you can before you miss one. If you fly though less than 15, you get to fly with your wingmen. The wire frame Arwing at the bottom of the screen depicts you. Your Arwing must ''fill'' in the space of this hologram at all times. Following along with your wingmen is no easy task to pull off; it requires lots of practice, believe me.
Now, for Game Mode... you’re in for a real treat. When you select this mode, you will be at the map screen. Here in the map screen, you will see all the planets. You also get to choose one of the three paths. The yellow path in the middle is Level 1: the easiest. The blue route on top is Level 2: the trickier one. And of course, the toughest one there is, the orange path on the bottom: Level 3.
Each course consists of six stages, but Level 3 has seven. All have two stages of which are on Venom. But of course, this isn't like Star Fox 64 where you can take a secret path to another, though there are some exceptions.
Gameplay and Replay Value 10+/10
When you have chosen your path, you escape from the Cornerian base and head out on your adventure. Each stage consists of obstacles, a hoard of star fighters and a boss at the end. The bosses can be a piece a cake, while some can be annoying as hell, and some can be the toughest machines around, especially at Level 3!
Every once in a while, one of your wingmen will be chased by a star fighter, shoot it down and keep your men alive! This can also go the other way around, but don't be greedy shooting down a target that's not yours!
When you defeat a boss, you are rewarded points for how many star fighters your team vaporizes. If you manage to get a 100% on the first level, you will be awarded a continue as you have scored 10,000 points. ! Oh, what fun!
Replay value wise... With a game like this, you will keep coming back for MORE! I mean it! This game is the toughest Star Fox game I ever played. Even the fabled Star Fox 64 is much easier than this!
Rent or Buy?
Don't bother asking this question! Get the game now! You will not regret it, at all.
Closing Statement
This game may not be THE best flight-sim game; it is still very good nonetheless! Give this game a try, and if you like it, you'll soon understand why this game deserves the hype and fame. If you don't, well, that's a different story...
