The portrayal of Christians
So I have this pen pal. Her name is Katie. We usually talk about books and writing, but also random things like Spiderman and also, Christianity. I told her that I am a Christian, and she replied that she was raised Catholic, but was now too cynical for religon. Now that's something I completely understand, and I told her so. Anyway, we've started discussing religious subjects, and she told me that she was nervous around people who tried to 'convert' her because of how judgemental they always are. She said that she can never get any real answers because every Christian she talks to is very close-minded and starts yelling at her when she says that she doesn't believe in everything they do. I told her that I wasn't trying to be some kind of evangelist, but that I would be happy to give her a more open minded view of Christianity.
Anyway, I do have a point. What can we do to stop this image that Christians have earned? It's awful, and it makes it so much harder if someone wants to witness. I'm not exactly sure what I want here, but have any of you had an experience like this?

Re: The portrayal of Christians
It seems simple, but maybe I'm not seeing the big picture.
Recognize the difference between a Christian (originally "one who follows Christ") and one of those people who pick and choose the pleasant parts of following the religion to construct for themselves a nice c.ultural faith. It's socially admirable to be a church-attending, tithe-paying, baby-kisser -not that there's anything wrong with those. But what about the mercy, self-sacrifice, humility, compassion and patience? I guess not all Christians are hypocrites, but the idea of actually practicing what you preach seems to be a lost value. The best I know to do for now is to check myself first, and take the logs out of my own eyes before admonishing my neighbors.

To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breath were life.
