Harry Potter

I was engaged in an interesting and lively discussion on popular books of the modern age and Harry Potter came up (the topic, that is, not the wizard himself). My stance was "disappointingly redundant". One of my intellectual superiors said only a most edifying, "they suck", didn't bother to explain himself, and the last disagreed with both of us, but also couldn't explain why. For those of you who've read some or all, with whom do you agree? Rowling good writer? Yea, nay or something else...

All I can say is that I sincerely wish I could make a billion dollars writing six books that all have precisely the same plot and that are forgotten twenty minutes after you've read them. (That was my experience, at any rate.)

I've read them. I confuse them in my head all the time. I have no recollection of ever reading the sixth one other than my dad bringing it home. Everyone told me that I read it, but I have no idea what happened. I'm guessing the same thing that happened in the other five?

I actually liked the third one--Prisoner of Azkaban--but that was only because it was slightly different and had Sirius Black in it. Her books are really easy to read, which makes it good for high elementary-middle schoolers. I liked them when I was 9. To be honest, I like Harry Potter fanfiction better than the books themselves.

And then there's Harry Potter himself. He's very universal. I don't like the characterization, or lack thereof, that Rowling used.

But, for some reason, I keep reading them.

I never read any of them so I can hardly comment. Though, one of the reasons I didn't is that I find, generally, when things are that hyped up, one can never quite figure out why.

I've never read the books...but I've seen part of the movies. i can't say that I was extremely impressed. they are all more or less the same. I mean, the characters just don't really seem to develope and I have to say that I think it's kind of glorifying witch craft. Now, I know that people could say the same thing about Lord of the Rings or something, but in my opinion that is completely different because the whole movie is not based on the wizardry. All that to say that I'm not a huge fan and I just don't get it when I see kids who can't put the books down once they've picked them up.

Just curious, but how can you know if they're "glorifying witchcraft" if you haven't read them? After all, books can be different than movies. A friend of mine was taking a children's literature class at a Christian college, and they were reading Harry Potter, and some people complained about it. They didn't think it was morally right. So the professor told them to just read the first chapter or two, and then if they still thought it was wrong, then they could stop. They all read it, and no one objected.

I don't know. They're a fun read at first, but get monotonous after a while. I know that for me, Harry Potter has had no effect on my spiritual life, and I have no desire to practice witchcraft after reading them (although I was secretly hoping for a Hogwarts letter when I turned 11). *Shrugs* They're not as great as they're made out to be, and they're also not as bad (in the magic/witchcraft/sorcery department) as they're made out to be.

you have a good point there^^^^ I'm pretty much saying that from what people I know told me.And sum of my rents friends said that they read through a few of them before they would let their child read them and they said that it was pretty much *glorifying witchcraft* thats what they thought though.Me I've never read them but I have seen a few mins (when flipping through channels) of one of the movies and I didn't care for it.Neway thats just my opinion.

Yes, that is a good point and I guess I should apologize for my statements that I have no first hand proof of. However, in the movies, which I have seen a good number of, I felt that witchcraft was being glorified in some ways. I also have to agree with you in saying that even the movies get rather boring after you've watched the the third movie, but you felt like you just watched another version of the first one...if that makes any sense.
