James

So, I started reading James, and quite a few things stuck out to me. I was wondering if anyone was interested in reading/discussing it with me.

Sure. Did you have a timeframe in mind? (I've got a fair amount of stuff going on, but I can always make room for one more project...)

Me? An actual plan? Heh.
Um, well let's see. James has a whole five chapters, so it won't take long to read. What I've been doing is underlining verses that have stuck out to me, and if everyone wants to do something like that then we could post them, and discuss what we think they mean, or what they meant to us personally, or how this verse can singlehandedly save the ozone layer, etc. Also any thoughts on the book/chapter as a whole would be welcomed...we should probably break it down by chapter (as in, tell your thoughts on chapter one, others will comment, give their own; move on). So if everyone could have at least chapter one read by Thursday, then we could start then (or before then, it just depends on when everyone who wants to do this sees this). I doubt it would take longer than a week or so to do the whole book.

How's that for a plan?

Great! Anyone is welcome to join, at any time.

Alright, so, it's Thursday, and time for discussion of Chapter 1. The verses that I underlined the first time I read it were (and mine's an ESV version, by the way):
"For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits." [verse 11]
I really liked the imagery in this verse. It gives me a very clear picture in my head, and helps me understand the reality of the verse. Throughout the Bible, there are lots of stories that tell about not getting caught in your riches, or storing treasures on earth, etc. but this is the one that stands out to me the most.

"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger."
[verse 19]
Pretty straightforward. I think that if everyone followed this, then we would be living in a much happier place.

"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit oprhans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world."
[verses 26-27]
I really liked this. I think that often, we get so caught up in all the material details of religion (go to church, Sunday School, and Bible study every Sunday and Wednesday, participate in every Christian activity offered, make sure everyone knows that they are sinners etc.) that we forget the basics of compassion. It says 'keep oneself unstained from the world', not make sure everyone else is perfect, and make everyone think that you're perfect, when in reality, your heart is defiled.

Alright, well I may have more to say later, but I have to go to school now.

A hearty "mhmm!" to all that.
