Paroxysmal Rage in Chiari Kids
I just posted this at CCI parents' group, so thought I'd put it here for a file...never know if we might have our Chiari parents, Beth and Karma, come back or other parents...
it's also good for all of us to know, to help others.
I wanted to post a few links here which should help parents show
local doctors the connection between rage and Chiari as manifested in
children.
http://tinyurl.com/57hkw5 (Dr. Oro's blog)
http://tinyurl.com/62kydc (PubMed article)
http://tinyurl.com/643oa7 (last year BrainTalk discussion on this)
http://tinyurl.com/68oue4 (Journal of Neurosurgery article
mentioning "paroxysmal rage" as a symptom of CM)
http://tinyurl.com/6fdm3r (again, Dr. Oro's site, see #21)
http://tinyurl.com/5hjdwx (Dr. Oro again)
Here is a quote from another article by Dr. Oro
http://tinyurl.com/6s8354 "Paroxysms" :
Paroxysmal Rage
Population: two children described (2.5 & 8 year old)
Onset: sudden attacks of rage lasting seconds, minutes, or hours
EEG: normal
Trigger: none
Proposed mechanisms:
- irritation of meninges at foramen magnum
- distress caused by HA leads to raised ICP further increasing HA
Treatment: both cases resolved with posterior fossa decompression
****************************************
Virginia again: I thought you might find the "proposed mechanisms"
above interesting and something to share with your local doctors and
surgeons.
"A medical paroxysms is defined in my Mac dictionary as "a sudden
recurrence or attack of a disease; a sudden worsening of symptoms."
******************************************
I hope you don't mind this long post, but you can these print out and
give to your doctor to show definitely that rage and behavior changes
ARE a clear symptom of Chiari.
We are going to ask Dr. Bolognese to give us something on this that
we can post, as well.
You may notice I am using links that show "tinyurl"...when links are
very long, as these medical articles tend to be, they will not work
when copy pasted onto our board, because they "wrap around" and
create a space that should not be in the url. If you want to post a
long url link on the board here, you can go to www.tinyurl.com and
have the long link put into a short form, as I have done above.
I truly hope this helps you parents and your children. Doctors need
to recognize that behavior changes ARE a definite symptom in Chiari
kids and according to these articles, can be resolved with
decompression.
