Ja 1:21-25
This study is based upon Ja 1:21-25, in which we read concerning
"The Implanted Word" (the KJV uses the word "Engrafted"):
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of
naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is
able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not
hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer
of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his
natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his
way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth
[therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work,
this man shall be blessed in his deed. (James 1)
God Bless the study of your word. Guide us , direct us, in your Son's beautiful name.
Amen

Re: Ja 1:21-25
This time I think I will sort of do things a bit differently.
I am asking, the first person along here, to take the first scripture and elaborate.
Then whom ever is next along take the second, adding comments to the preceding if you like.
How does that sound? I will wrap it in the end?
Let me know....
Love

Re: Ja 1:21-25
Okay...
:21 from the Amplified --
So get rid of all uncleaness and the rampant outgrowth of wickedness, and in a humble (gentle, modest) spirit receive and welcome the Word which implanted and rooted [in your hearts] contains the power to save your souls.
:21 from the New Living Translation --
So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
from The Message --
So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden in you life.
The notes from my NKJV Study Bible talk about the meekness being that we have to have a teachable spirit, and that the word used here for 'soul' means 'life'.
I love the analogy of the gardener and being landscaped. In order to thrive, seeds and seedlings must be nurtured and fed. The soil needs to be fertile and able to sustain life, our teachable spirit. We have to weed out the bad things and the worldly things that occupy our lives to make room for growth in the Word.
I think about my own little garden by my front porch right now. From a distance it looks pretty good, all lush and green, but when you get close up you can see that all that green is weeds and tall grasses that are choking out the lovely seedlings that I planted in the spring. My azalea bushes are withered and brown. My other flowers are still showing bits of red and yellow through all the green but they have not grown taller or filled out as they would if I could tend the garden as I should.
I've been content to sit back and let the weeds grow because it looks 'good enough' from the street, but in the end the plants that I worked to set in the soil and fed Miracle Gro to in their first weeks now are suffering.
It is so with our spiritual lives. We can get complacent with the seedlings of the teachings we have and think we've done enough, let other things occupy our time and our lives. After a while the worldly things begin to take over and choke out the Word. so this scripture reminds us to stay humble, see the weeds for what they are and get rid of them so that the healthy, beautiful plants can grow.
Wow!! Where'd that come from?! The Spirit, has to be. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow if it stops raining here?!!

Re: Ja 1:21-25
Oh Karen! How wonderful! I tell you, the spirit was speaking ...
The garden :
from The Message --
So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden in you life.
I would have not found this. God is at work here this day in this study.
Today, we had an alter call after the sermon, there was much on my mind and heart. I needed to weed this, to have the clean heart I need to have. Apparently, quiet a few felt the same. We had a garden party.lol
Karen I did so love this. Thank you so much.,
Next for Verse 22?
God Bless you and I hope your garden isn't hard to weed after the rain. I can not remember when it last rained here. The ground, is parched and cracked open.
Maybe soon----

Re: Ja 1:21-25
I'm sorry I haven't been able to be as active here, my brain just has not been working well at all.
But Vs. 22, I can make the simple comment on that it is like "faith without works is dead."
Or, practice what you preach.
It's called obedience. To do what you are told. Do not just listen and then go about your business doing whatever you want to, but listen to the Word and obey it.
Anything else and you are lying to yourself if you think you are obeying God.

Re: Ja 1:21-25
Karen, I love your sermon about your garden! I couldn't grasp it yesterday but just read it and love it!
So, the next verses are saying, in plain English, that if you read the Word but do not obey it, you are like someone who looks into a mirror and then walks away and forgets what you look like.
I wondered about that, if there is a deeper meaning. The Word is like a mirror to us. It shows us who we really are, it cuts to the heart of the matter and leaves us bare and open and without facade.
So, a hearer of the word but not a doer, he or she experiences that deeper truth, but then just conveniently forgets about it, forgets about the truth about the deeper person, the True person that God knows.
Forgets about those weeds in the garden that are choking out the good plants and settles for the garden that looks good at a distance, to others.
And as the preceding verse implies, if you do this, you are kidding yourself. You are kidding yourself that everything is good in your life. Kidding yourself that you love God because if you did love God, you'd obey His word.
I would guess all Christians are guilty of doing this from time to time. We are human in nature and sometimes we try to ignore those nudges from God's word about something we need to deal with in our lives. But usually, the true believer will eventually come around because God isn't giving up on us. He's going to keep nudging us and keep bugging us until we finally give in and say, 'Okay, I really do need to deal with this. If I love God, and I do, then I need to heed His word and chastisement. If I love God, I love His creation and my fellow man. If I love God, then I trust in His Word, trust that He has a plan for my life."
Any thoughts on this?

Re: Ja 1:21-25
Virginia, you have said this as well as any theologian could.
I am glad your thinker got back into focus for you. Sure looks like it has..Thank you Lord.
In Summary , although Virginia, has.. again ...
Undoubtedly we have heard it...but hearing it is not enough!
a. You must lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness - that
is, to REPENT - Ac 17:30-31
b. You must receive the message of the gospel with meekness - in other
words, to BELIEVE - Jn 3:16
c. You must also be a "doer of the Word" - for example, to OBEY HIS
COMMAND TO BE BAPTIZED
1) For Jesus is the author of eternal salvation to those who OBEY
Him - He 5:9
2) And in addition to the commands to believe and repent, He calls
us to be baptized! - Mk 16:16; Mt 28:19; Ac 2:38; 22:16
Receive with meekness these very words of Jesus and His apostles, for
that is how the Word of God is able to save your soul...
Live the word everyday to others...
