James 2:14-26
"14 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit?
17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
18 But some will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder.
20 Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works,
23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness"; and he was called the friend of God.
24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead."
Thank you Father for the reading of your word.

Please read in your Bibles these verses. Review concordances, discuss accordingly.
Thank you for all your input.

Re: James 2:14-26
Some people know the sound doctrine and salvation but they know the right "words" but do not match up with their "works".
Some people I know can quote Bible verses better than some Pastors I know. But their talk does not match their walk.
James is telling us that by doing this that our faith without works,it becomes a dead faith. I think too that it gives the person a false sense of Salvation and eternal life.
In my studing I also learned that even demons know and have faith but it is a dead faith. They beleive in Christ and know that He is the Chosen Son of God. the Deity. And they also know that Jesus will be the judge.
Dead faith includes intellect alone. Demonic faith includes intellect and emotions both that will not save.
To have a true saving faith we have to examine our lives, our hearts and we have to openly accept Christ into our hearts, seek His forgivenss and truly change our way that we live. We throw away the old self, examine our hearts, and put on the new self and follow Christ fully.
We all are all at different stages of our faith and growth. Some are still drinking milk and others are eating a big juicy steak.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
try me and know my anxieties;
"And see if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting."
Psalms 139:23-24
Thank you Father for guiding me. Amen

Re: James 2:14-26
Well, I was thinking about these Scriptures in the middle of the night last night, so I'm gonna post anyway!
I was thinking about "dead faith." And I decided that dead faith means non-existent faith.
Like if my dog dies, he doesn't exist anymore.
So, if we have true faith, we WILL exhibit godly works. Not because of anything of us, but because of the Holy Spirit which gave us the faith and which filled us when we believed.
I know from my own experiences, I used to do good things before I was saved...but after I was saved and I did (or do) something good, it felt different. It was a Godly thing.
So, I believe that James is saying that if you say you have faith and you are not showing it in your life, then you are fooling yourself, you simply do not have faith, God is not in you, you have, in essence, dead faith (no faith).
Because Faith brings forth the fruits of the Spirit.

Re: James 2:14-26
Exactly Virginia! When I had already accepted Christ in my life but misitry work started to get bothersome, it no longer was fruitful because I was not walking the way I should of therefor my works were not for God...if they were then it would not have bothered me or burnt me out at the time.Does that make sense? I confused myself now.
I have heard people tell me when their loved one has died that, "oh she will go to heaven. She was always doing something for someone and was the greatest lady around." and my heart sank, because that is not true. Good works do not get you into heaven. It is only by the blood of Christ that does and if you do not accept Christ into your heart and walk Christlike in all you do, then you will not go to heaven. So many "Christians" are blind by that...it is sad.
Good thoughts! Love, Joleen

"Like if my dog dies, he doesn't exist anymore." Now Virginia, am I to believe you do not believe Dogs have a place in heaven? Or dogie heaven?
God has his eye on every sparrow, have they not earned their rewards?
Really not trying to be funny. I'd like to think, God loves them enough to reward them too.
Really afraid of this response, "hiding"...

Re: James 2:14-26
This is the main thing James wants us to see: we are saved by faith alone, but faith never remains alone, it becomes active. But James is aware of the opposite problem too. Works without faith, as their source, are also empty. And this can be just as big a problem. This is what we mean by legalism. We obey, but without faith in God and God's being true to his character and word. We become mere activists, doing things for God in order to win his favor, or avoid his wrath or help God out because somehow he demands our assistance. In this mode, we act as if God were a slave-master and we are servants who don't really belong to Him, who are not really a part of His family. We miss entirely the kind of relationship God has with us in Jesus. We don't see and count on God as our heavenly Father and Jesus as our brother. We don't trust in the goodness of God to raise us up to be his beloved children and to share in every good thing He freely wants to give us if only we would trustingly receive it.

Yes Virginia and Joleen, that is precisely what James is telling us.
It would be like , being a basketball player. He gets the suit on, but until he plays , trains, works, maybe breaks an ankle or two, he isn't a basketball player.
The uniform alone, isn't it.
Faith will grow and works is the fruit of that faith.

Re: James 2:14-26
Gale, how about 2 or 3 more verses to study?
I don't do well with more verses than that, don't know about the others...but hope we can still keep this topic going!! I love it!
