James 3: 6-12
James 3:6-12
"6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind,
8 but no human being can tame the tongue-a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God.
10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish?
12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh."
Discussion? Commentaries?

Re: James 3: 6-12
Great scripture!
It is true that most wild animals can be tamed by man, but no mans tonque can be tamed by himself. But with God's help, we must tame it. here is a referance- Ep 4:29.
And how sad it is that some curse man but then bless od on Sundays?
We go to church on Sunday and we sing, pray and raise our voices in praise to God but then yell at a family menmber or curse someone on the way home when they cut us off.
Through the illistration of the fig tree James is saying that ones true heart is revealed by what comes out of the mouth. Jesus taught us this in Mk 7:20-23 "And he said,"What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adultires, fornifications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man."
Whether we teach or not we need to seek God's help to control our tongue. As Christians we are looked at by non Christians very closely and what we do, not remembering sometimes is that they are waiting for us to mess up. how does that represent God? We need to do what David said in Psalm 19:14
"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be
acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."
Amen, love, Joleen
(Psalms 19:14)

Re: James 3: 6-12
I just want to explain why I didn't write anything yet. I don't want you to change Bible Study here b/c it does work...but for me when there is that long a section, my brain closes shut. In fact, the very first sentence is long and awkward, and my brain closed on it. It's a strange thing to describe, so that is why I haven't posted anything. But never give up BS here!! Just keep it loose letting people write as they wish, that's my theory anyway!
Thinking about what Joleen wrote, though, reminded me of back in the 70's, I was walking thru the woods of Northern Idaho with my Dad and my sister, who is Buddhist. This was before my Dad got saved.
And I must have been talking bout the Lord b/c my Dad said something about, Christians just talk all the time about Jesus!
And I told him the Scripture that Joleen mentioned. I said that whatever is dear to your heart, you talk about. If you love cars (which he did), you talk about them. If you love horses, you talk about them.
This really helped him to understand.
My sister, the same year, said to my husband, "The problem with you Christians is all you want to talk about is Jesus. You can be around a Buddhist and never know that is what they are!"
My husband, the cowboy, said, "Well, if I had a new diamond ring on my finger, I'd want to show it to people and talk about it. If I had a wart on my backside, I'd hide it!"

Thank you Virginia. I am so sorry. You said before and I forgot...
How would the above work, scripture by scripture?I hope you will forgive my lapse in memory.

Re: James 3: 6-12
Oh Gale, you are so sweet!
Please do not slow down the study for me. Everyone would get way bored with it (even me) and it would take us forever to move ahead!! Just keep going the speed for reg. folks and I will chime in where I can. I usually find a place, ha!!! Just wanted folks to know why I wasn't saying too much.
You can move ahead when you are ready, I think this is working, really I do.
loveya
