James 5:13-15
James 5:13-15
"13 Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.
14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
Discussion? Commentaries?
Thank you Father for the reading of your word.

Re: James 5:13-15
This passage, I think, calls us to pray in all things. The bad, which I think for many of us is easy, or at least more likely for us that we would cry out when in need; but also the good, which I think many times we forget to express our joy and thanks to God when things are going well. But that is the way of our culture: we seem to gravitate to talking about the bad news, the tragedies, the drama, and to complaining but not to report on the happy stuff or give praises for good things.
The next part tells us it is okay to ask others to pray for us. This is God telling us that intercessory prayer works, but we have to trust in Him and have faith.

Re: James 5:13-15
You are so right Karen. We do, in our culture forget to Thank God for all the gifts He gives us everyday. We are so blessed, compared to other cultures through out the world.
Your response to crying out in need, instead of thanksgiving is also, very true.
Thank you Karen for your insight and discussion!
I wanted to ask, your thoughts on the use of oil. How did it come about to be used as Prayer for the sick?
Anyone?

Re: James 5:13-15
I'd be interested in learning that, as well, Gale, about the healing oil. I don't think I've ever done a study on that and do not know off hand when that started, what it goes back to...a Jewish tradition perhaps?
Good question! Good feedback from Karen, too.
There IS so much to James, where we learn about forgiveness and wisdom, healing and praying, and our ever present walk with the Lord. Where we learn that our faith is not by word only but in deed. That is the beauty of the Christian faith. You know, sometimes I meet people and I know they are Christians even before they say so or hint that they are. It's in how they act, speak, behave.

Re: James 5:13-15
Thanks Virginia.
Yes the olive oil is traced back many many years.
It was used in Jewish, Greek, Hebrew, Mediterranean cultures for various purposes.
Olive oil was a highly valued commodity. It was used to light the lamps. It was used to anoint furniture in temples, used to anoint the heads of Kings.
King David even had guards protecting his olive trees and store houses all the time.
It was used in medicine. As well as cosmetic applications. In medicine, it was used for laxatives, for clearing ears, for help with many ailments.
Olive oil was held in the highest esteem.
It is thought, the medicinal properties, along and combined with God's Blessing in prayer, the sick would be healed.
At one time only the Priests had the privilege of anointing with oil.
As James says here, the elders of the church, also have that right.
My minister uses oil to Bless the sick. In my prayer group, we also use the oil to anoint each other in special prayer.
So, there we have a brief , history of the value of Olive Oil.
Just a wee side note to our study.
Thanks so much Ladies.
I will post the last verses of James. It has been a rewarding study for me personally and for your sister group in my church. We finished there last Wednesday.
God Bless you.
