The Babylon Philosophy

One of my study Bibles says this in part of it's introduction to Daniel:

The Book of Daniel is a testimony to how God works out His purposes through His servants even in the courts of pagan rulers.

I thought this statement was a good paraphrase of the parallels that Beth Moore draws in her study of Daniel. This book that takes place in the year 605 B.C. is relevant for us because we are surrounded by a Babylon of our own: the culture in which we live. In Daniel, Babylon is a place; for us, Babylon is a philosophy.

We will first refer to Isaiah 47:8-10

Therefore, hear this now, you who are given to pleasures,
Who dwell securely,
Who say in you heart,'I am, and there is no one else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
Nor shall I know the loss of children';
But these two things shall come to you
In a moment, in one day:
The loss of children, and widowhood.
They shall come upon you in their fullness'
Because of the multitude of your sorceries,
For the great abundance of your enchantments.
For you have trusted in your wickedness;
You have said,'No one sees me';
Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you;
And you have said in your heart,
'I am, and there is no one else besides me.'

This brings us to the principal question:
What are some parallels between ancient Babylon and the western culture that seek to hold us captive?

Karen, these are poignant words from scripture. For certain, we in the western culture have been a *me* mentality. What can I buy today. A new car? A new house? A new fur? A new diamond? Well not so much me as I don't have funds for such, but it is a short order, give me quick society we live in.

It does frighten me, knowing what lies ahead for our Babylon.

Oh, you have intrigued my appetite. I do love Beth Moore studies. Thanks so much!!!

Indeed, it is the whole 'me' generation thing. We had a lengthy discussion in our group about that this past week.

Beth points out in her first video that
"We also have an enemy who wants to return us to places God called us to leave."

She gives the origin of 'Babylonia' as literally the land of Shinar. This is significant because this is where the Tower of Babel was constructed and God scattered the people there. Gen 11:1-4,8-9 In Gen 12:1, God calls Abram to leave his country, Chaldea, or Babylon, and go to where He would show him.

We are called from our old life by God to a new life, but it is easy to be taken captive by old ways.

We will go on to the Book of Daniel...

I had heard, I think, that Babylon was what we call Bagdhad now. Is that true?

or is my memory deceiving me?

There is such an "I" mentality in our culture right now. Abortion is one such example. To think that "I" comes before a life is the ultimate in selfishness. And this thing is legal in our country!

This is not to say that abortion is any worse than any other sin...they are all sin, we are all sinners, and all sin can be forgiven.

I am really impressed with Sarah Palin and how she chose to have her baby when she knew he was a Downs baby. And that child is SOOO precious and cute, when I see him on TV. She knew what the Lord had in store for her in terms of ministry and work on this earth, but she must have thought, God would not have given me a child if He thought I could not do both?

They say that everything going on in the economy right now is due to greed. Greed, that word is perfect for the "I" culture...selfishness. So, rich people in the markets on Wall Street cared more for filling their own full pockets with more...cared more for that than what might happen to our country or to individual people.

We also need to look into our own lives and see where greed has its grasp upon our hearts.

Indeed, I find myself really taken aback by what I think I really "need" when I'm out shopping. And we are constantly bombarded by the media ads to brainwash into thinking we need certain things. It is the 'indoctrination' Beth speaks of in her study. I try to not even look at the flyers that come in the newspaper, and mute the commercials on TV. I suppose even better would be not to turn TV on at all. Another area of discipline for which I need prayer.
