Daniel 1:1-5
Daniel 1:1-5
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the articles of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god.
Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Israel and some of the king's descendants and some of the nobles, young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans. And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king's delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king.
Note that the scripture says, "the Lord gave" Jehoiakim into Nebuchadnezzar's hand.
This demonstrates fulfillment of prophecy and the sovereignty of God.
Isaiah 39:5-8 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the Lord of hosts: 'Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says the Lord. 'And they shall take away some of your sons who will descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.'"
So Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good!" For he said, "At least there will be peace and truth in my days."
Talk about a Babylon mentality! Me, Me, Me!!
Daniel lived to see that prophecy come true, and was one of the royal descendants that was carried off.
Beth tells us that "we are also from the seed of the kingship" because we are children of God.
God is sovereign in our captivities as well. We may not be literally carried off as Daniel was, but we surely can be seduced by the culture in which we live and be carried away before we even realize it.
Note the description of the people Nebuchadnezzar wanted brought to Babylon. This is our illustration of what our society values today: youth and beauty, social status, intellectual capacity, wealth.
Beth reminds us that we have to become deliberate and intentional in the way that we live, to be cautious of being indoctrinated by our culture.
Are we being influenced or are we being a Godly influence?
Nothing is more dangerous than friendly captivity. What do you think that phrase means in light of the scripture and how we live today?

Re: Daniel 1:1-5
Very interesting Karen.
Friendly captivity, may mean, not sure if this is near what Beth is saying, but,
Being held captive by things. By, gold, or money, status, worldly possessions.
I think of King Nebuchadnezzar, he fed the boys the finest from the King's table. Clothed them, gave them status, education... That indeed is friendly captivity.
Thank you Karen for taking the time to bring this to us.
God Bless...

Re: Daniel 1:1-5
Exactly. Our group leader made the point last week that Satan doesn't say "Come and I'll make you miserable". He shows us the things that we think will make us happy, or at least seem to be good things, but we have to be intentional and deliberately view everything through God's lens.

Re: Daniel 1:1-5
A very good point. You know, this is easy done, in this society. We are not far removed from the sinful ways of Babylon.
Different time, same human frailties for sin. How easy to be enticed, when everyone else is caught up with this mentality. Fast food, fast life, fast living.
The youth also, following the crowd instead of the Bible ( God's lens).
I like this analogy...
Thanks Karen!
