2008 VMAs

Its currently 10:47 PM where I live. Central Standard Time abounds. Alas, I have just finished watching the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. A few highlights (and jeers) for everyone....

Russell Brand hosted. He walked out onstage to the sound of 'Rock And Roll Star' by Oasis playing in the background. Fitting. emoticon

-Britney Spears won three VMAs. Congrats.
-Tokio Hotel won the award for Best New Artist. Yay!
-Slipknot presented the award for Best Hip Hop Video with that actor who played McLovin in 'Superbad'. I think they had new masks on?

Sampling (or stealing, if you prefer) other people's music and performance style seemed to be the theme of the night. Rihanna was the first performer of the night, opening the show with 'Disturbia'. The live performance of the song had a chunk of 'Seven Nation Army' toward the end. emoticon

Christina Aguilera performed a new single from her upcoming greatest hits record. The song and performance were more than appropriately reminiscent of Goldfrapp. The song clearly samples 'Train'. emoticon

T.I.'s new song samples 'Dragonstea Din Tei' by O-Zone. Yeah. Okay. *shakes head*

In regards to the three artists mentioned above, I'm assuming people have just stopped trying to create their own music and struggle from an overwhelming desire to freely steal from the hard work of others? emoticon

The highlight of the entire show for me was Russell making promise ring jokes at the Jonas Brothers.
Aside from that, it was pretty boring to me.

i wouldn't say that, I think that samples are used more often these days to entertain people as well as changing the way you'd usually think about a song

I saw Krafty Kuts last week, and they mixed Icky Thump by the White Stripes with Sirens by Dizzee Rascal, a mix that I'd never have thought of and that was brilliant at the same time. Although I do agree that sometimes it can just be lazy, I would diss Kid Rock here but Joey would probably bite me...

I've known Russell for quite some time, and his jokes would not have suprised me at one of his gigs; however, I think he was trying to hard to reach out to Americans at the VMA's as his political jokes seemed out of character. Anyway...I'll always support him.
America needs more of an open-minded sense of humour and I am American.
As for the VMA's themselves...I don't have much to say. MTV deserves the reputation they have: more reality programs than music.

i think it was also partly due to the fact that he's a new face in america. if it had been chris rock or some other big american comedian, his comments would not have been taken as harshly. then again, some people need to get a sense of humour (jordin sparks, i'm looking in your direction)
