Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
I have become seriously disturbed by the fact that Christians, who are supposed to care more for God's creation than anyone else, are so unbelievably wasteful. We don't recycle, we waste water, we drive big SUVs (guilty, your honor), we have these massive buildings that are totally inefficient, we use more styrofoam than an army, etc. etc.
I am starting to turn in to one serious hippie. I am waiting for all of our cars (which are all paid for) to die so that we can buy rice-burners. I'm looking into solar panels for our house. I'm carrying stuff home from the church to put it in recycle bins in our house.
Question is--am I crazy? Is this just much a-do about nothing? Or do we have a responsibility to be "Hippies" about the earth?

Re: Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
idk about being all completely hippy or even if hippy is the right word for it but i do feel that we are on this earth for a reason and that we all should have a goal and opposition to keep the earth as clean as we can
my momma always told me that i need to leave things cleaner than i found them... i think it's the same with the world
agree or dissagree?

Re: Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
i agree with tj
God gave us this world to use til He gets back, we really should start cleaning up before we run out of time.
I mean the new heaven is supposed to be on earth right? (says so in revelation)
so i think we should be hippies about stuff like that

Re: Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
not that i have a problem being called a hippy it's just im not sure that that should be the word used to describe it
hippies kind of just like the world as is and want to keep it that way and also there is some bad connotations with hippies (steryotypes)
and i feel we aren't here to keep the earth the way it is again i think we should fight to get it better than it was when we came into it
ya know

Re: Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
Well, when I say "Hippie," I'm not going all "Peace, Love, Dope!" on everyone!!! The peace and love are okay, but we will not be passing the chronic around at youth anytime during my tenure.
I just have an overwhelming sense that most Christians by into the hype that global warming is not real, environmental issues are for liberal nut-cases, and that being environmentally conscious is somehow not a Christian value. This bothers me to no end.
As for me, I firmly believe that global warming is real--but what if it isn't? Does that mean we should pillage the natural world and simply say, "Not my problem?" I believe that it is incredibly lazy and irresponsible of us to not take simple steps to be better stewards of God's creation.
I mean, how hard is it to by paper cups? To recycle?

Re: Should Christians be Hippies!?!?!?!?
i don't think that it is that hard to buy paper cups and i personally don't... my family has a cabinate full of glass cups that we have had FOREVER and we recycle our newspapers ... but that is about the extent of our major recycling but however we do take our trash to a recycling thingie in campobello....
so i guess we are pretty on top the 'hippy' thing
i guess
