looking for advice on new computer

If anyone can help it would be appreciated...

basically I want a FAST computer for playing games and running other programs such as cd burner/animation shop/paint shop pro etc

I am of the opinion the best ones are either a pentium4 or an AMD with powerful graphics cards, im asking around so I can try and get it built with what I want for a reasonable price, I think these package pc's are a total rip off most of the time and since I just need a tower if I know what I want I can just ask them to build it.

Re: looking for advice on new computer

I just recently got a Dell Dimension E310, panther. I don't know too much about computers but I have 1 gig of ram and 200 gigs of HD. Intel Processor, 2.0 gigahertz (sp). I have found that I can't play the videos on MTV, VH1 without constant buffering. Also I can't play the promos on the Cold Case site at CBS. I thought that increasing all the above mentioned would do the trick. The only thing is - is that I might need the fastest online service thru adelphia and I downgraded on last fall. That's about the extent of what I know. If anyone knows more about my situtation, I'd be interested in hearing. Oh and also I can't play all the videos on Ellen DeGeneres' Show website. It's truly frustrating.

One thing I did notice is that there is still this push to sell 256 RAM computers and when I bought my 1 gig RAM (6 weeks ago) I thought I was all set for at least 1 year but low and behold they are now selling 2 gig RAM computers now and the price is what I paid for mine. emoticon

I am by no means an expert in this area myself but the buffering may have to do with your internet connection, the quicker your connection the less buffering required, Im on ADSL and its usually only HUGE clips that buffer on my computer. Are you downloading them to your hard drive or just opening them on the net to watch?

The ones on MTV and VH1 sites can't be downloaded nor any of the stuff on CBS site which I frequently visit as well as the Ellen site. I have DSL CABLE high speed but there is one level higher I could go. I'm still surprised that it buffers so much. It's a bummer. I am considering paying the extra if that will sole the problem.

Yep, ineedsaname, I'm pretty sure that connection speed is the only thing that causes buffering like that, which makes me wonder why Ellen's webmasters would put such huge (extra-high quality?) videos on her site without at least offering a lower-quality alternative.

Sorry, Panther, but despite my vast knowledge of all things internet- and graphics-related, *cough*, I know very little about PCs themselves.  The one I'm using now I bought about two years ago through tigerdirect.com, prepackaged with XP and a bundle of programs, for about $420, and has everything I need and then some.  But I don't play games like you do (other than the occasional solitaire or that gem game at MSN), although it plays DVD movies ok.

thats cool Lesigner im not directing the question soley at you, anyone willing to throw thier 2 cents in is welcome emoticon

If your on high speed ADSL then I think the problem may be with your connection to that website, contact the website and tell them whats going on and see if they can help you out.

I hope someone can give you some good answers, Panther. emoticon

You know, I read once that a DSL connection speed can depend a lot on how far you are from the nearest... I can't remember what they called it, but some kind of central hookup point of sorts.

I would also contact the website and let them know that their videos are buffering a lot on a high speed connection. emoticon

I guess I could contact the Ellen site. It runs on Apple (quicktime) or something. Not the usual Windows Media or Real Player. It's really odd. I wanted to rewatch Ellen's re-enactment of Capote (The movie). Yes, she did one and I thought it was pretty funny. Also there's one there of Alison Jammey? accepting a Mid-Life Time Achievement Award from Ellen that was hilarious. I do have that one on tape from the tv. emoticon

I don't think I'm all that far. 150 miles maybe...

Well I doubt I'll contact the Ellen site people. Oh well.
