Old Computer

I have an old computer that I don't use since getting my laptop. Could I use the modem (correct word?) as extra storage for off line stuff such as games and documents, etc? If so, would I just run a cable to the laptop or would I need to rig it a different way?

A modem connects you to the internet. It does not store anything.

That said, you can store extra files on the hard drive of your old computer. How you get it from your laptop to your other computer depends on what you have to work with.

You might be able to "network" the two computers. I've never done this myself so don't know the procedure, but I've seen a network wizard on my computer and it would probably involve something like that.

An external drive (or "stick") might be an option, if you can plug it into each computer. But with this, there are actually external drives out there that might have more storage than the old computer, depending on your old computer's storage capacity, so you could store it all on the external memory instead if this is the case.

If your laptop can write to CDRWs, then you could transfer files that way.

If your laptop can write to floppies and the files are small enough to fit on them, you could transfer them that way.

If you can hook both computers up to the internet (either at the same time or at different times) you could email the files to yourself and/or upload them to the web and then download them with the other computer. This really works no differently than emailing files to a friend and your friend saving them to their own computer.

Maybe someone can come up with some ideas I hadn't thought of.

To have a connection between two computers , you need a so-called 'crossed' cable.
This is an ethernet cable which is 'crossed' in one end, or a 'mirrored' plug if you like.
By using this you can connect and copy freely between two computers
