IE7 Cleartype Font

Have you noticed how thick/bold all the fonts seem to be in IE7? It's really messing up my layouts so I googled hacks to remove it with css/html but the best I have found is how to disable it on my own browser.

Dynamic Drive:

If it is ClearType that is causing this, you can disable it in the configuration. It is under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > (scroll to) Multimedia > uncheck 'Always use ClearType for HTML'. Click OK and all that good stuff. You will need to restart the browser for this to take effect. ClearType started to become the default in new installations of IE 6 at some point but earlier IE 6 installations had this feature disabled by default. In IE 7, it is on by default or is an innocuous option during installation. It is supposed to smooth out the appearance of characters, like anti-aliasing in a paint or image program. This can make some fonts appear bolder, more legible.

Do you know of a way to fix it with CSS? I haven't ran acrossed a solution on my google quest.. but I havent searched that far either.

Re: IE7 Cleartype Font

ClearType has always been an option from my XP desktop and affects all fonts, whether through IE, FF, Notepad, or even in the taskbar. I didn't realize IE also had this as a setting that is separate from the OS. I guess I never looked for it (I still never upgraded to 7 yet).

Unfortunately, it's a user setting that doesn't seem to be overridable with CSS.

Gah that sucks lol. But yeah there is a difference, in the font sizes/boldness in ie7 and with what I want it to look like. Funny thing is.. I was making a skin last night, I hadn't named the skin yet.. but noticed how horrible it looked in IE7 so I named the skin 'Boycott Internet Explorer emoticon. I'll take a screenshot..

I guess those aren't the best colors to use in an example but you should see my point lol.

Re: IE7 Cleartype Font

Is IE7 still in beta? We could all send them complaint mail to have them make "OFF" the default for ClearType. It looks like crap. When I have it on, text looks multi-colored, especially thin, BLACK sans-serif text. As I look at this posting screen, half of the sans-serif text (title, posting and submit buttons) is burgundy, and half the courier (message box) is green!

My eyes are getting pretty heavy, so I'm going to head to bed now. Have a good night, Josh. emoticon

I don't know. I don't recall ever receiving a notice to upgrade my IE, so maybe. I don't feel like Googling to find out right now. emoticon
