Hi Needsaname! emoticon

You don't have to join Netscape to download their browser. emoticon  You can download it here. emoticon

I prefer Mozilla Firefox over Netscape, and you can get that here. emoticon

Thank. I thought I downloaded that exact same thing for Netscape but it didn't work. But this time it did work. I will reload Mozilla too. Thanks so much! emoticon

I don't know what the big deal is with the browsers but I still like my IE the best. Netscape's isn't too bad either.

The biggest reason for the average surfer to use a browser other than IE is for security.  IE is the only browser I know of that uses ActiveX, which shady webmasters that know their stuff can use to plant spyware and viruses on your computer when you visit their sites.  They also use other methods, most, if not all of which take advantage of IE-specific security holes.

Then you have little extras like tabbed browsing and extensions that IE doesn't have.  I personally love tabbed browsing, because it keeps me from having several windows open at once. emoticon

Of course, IE is the only browser to my knowledge that supports colored scrollbars and filters, but it can't support png alpha transparency, min- and max-height, min- and max-width, or a lot of other things that would make a web developer's job a LOT easier if it did support them.

Web developers notice more differences in browsers when designing layouts for reasons like those stated above, and especially when using CSS instead of tables for layout... but even tables behave differently from browser to browser if they're not coded correctly.  We have to be careful to check everything we do on as many browsers as we can, just to make sure the same page looks the same in all browsers.  So if you run across a web page that would look good if it weren't for some odd quirks and you can't figure out why the designer would leave a page like that, check it in a different browser.  Chances are they only checked it through one browser when they designed it, and didn't think to check it in another one before uploading it.

That's probably a longer answer than you expected, but there you have it. emoticon

Yes, that was a long answer and I didn't understand 3/4 of it. emoticon But then I'm not technically savvy like you. emoticon So far my symantec Internet Security doesn't allow me to open pages that run Active X and I don't. Now, I guess when I encounter those Active X pages on IE, I should switch the browser and see what happens for the page. Maybe my symantec won't allow me no matter what Browser I have. Will have to look into that sometime. emoticon

If you understood 1/4 of it, then that gives me hope that you learned something. emoticon emoticon

Since IE is the only browser that runs ActiveX, your Symantec should let you open those pages in a different one. emoticon
