Talk in Class Turns to God, Setting Off Public Debate on Rights
The student who recorded his teacher preaching in history class actually has had death threats. So much for the WWJD braclets eh?

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
The nerve of these people saying Matthew was baiting the teacher for money and notoriety! It's pretty evident that Paszkiewcz was preaching in class in years before Matthew got stuck with him. However, Andrew Lewczuk, a former student of Mr. Paszkiewicz, praised his abilities as a history teacher but said he regretted that he had not protested the religious discussions. "In the end, the manner in which Mr. Paszkiewicz spoke with his students was careless, inconsiderate and inappropriate," he wrote to The Observer. "It was an abuse of power and influence, and it's my own fault that I didn't do anything about this."
I hope all his students, past and present, who have felt "uncomfortable" with him telling them they're all going to Hell all launch a class action suit against the guy.

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
This guy could be a great teacher, I don't know. But being a mormon and a teacher, I do think his comments in class were out of line. I am Mormon and I get questions about the faith freqquently especially aafter the westward expansion lesson by our history teacher. I feel comfortable answering questions about the historical aspects of the Church However when asked about the doctrine, I draw the line and tell them ONLY after school and with your parents in the room.
I taught for years at a Catholic school (yeah it was a stretch) and I used that same comment there. When asked about the big bang theory and dinosaurs, I had a couple of responses that seemed to cool people down. I beleive that God created the earth. I have no clue as to how or how long it may have taken. What we currently have are scientific theories.
That's my 2 cents as an educator

Welcome to Illusia, Onyx!
It sounds like you strike a healthy balance when it comes to discussing religion in the classroom from a historical standpoint, and I like that you don't discuss doctrine without the parents being there.
I'm curious, what did the children ask about big bang theory and dinosaurs, and what did you tell them?

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
I had a great geology teacher in college, and we discussed at length evolution, big bang, and lots of other stuff I can't remember now.
He said that as a scientist he cannot ignore the evidence, the fossil and geologic record. How did God create the world? He didn't know and neither do I. We have some very interesting theories, and that is what they are is theories. Who knows what evidence for something else is just out there?
My teacher also said that by studying the geologic and fossil record, he was even more convinced of a creator. To think that all of this was mere accident, was to him as a scientist, lacking the most in evidence. I feel the same way.
As for discussing doctrine, I limit myself to the basics, just enough for one to have a sense of context. I teach World Geography and will have to share some basics about a variety of faiths as they relate to culture. I try to be respectful and to remind the students that the beliefs of others are different. Not bad, not good, but different, I leave the good and the bad for them to judge.
did I answer your question?

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
Somewhat. While I know that many Christians dismiss the big bang theory, I can't be sure whether or not that specific Catholic school did. Based on your response here, I can only guess that they did dismiss it, and that you were making room for the possibility of a big bang without taking God out of the equation, and without stating the big bang as a fact, thus leaving it open for their interpretation, without trying to sway them one way or the other. Is this correct?
He said that as a scientist he cannot ignore the evidence, the fossil and geologic record. How did God create the world? He didn't know and neither do I. We have some very interesting theories, and that is what they are is theories.
I hear this from a lot of creationists in discussions about evolution. "Theories" is usually prefixed by "just", and I'm seeing a hidden "just" in your statement as well, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Do you dispute the proof of evolution, or are you only questioning the possibility of a big bang?

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
There is a difference between a theory and a fact. Do I dispute big bang theory? heck no, I recognize it as a possibility. I do not believe in a literal 6 , 24 hour day creation. But I must qualify by saying that God, being all powerful could have. I do not want to limit God. I believe the creation process was long by human standards.
I also believe there maybe another explanation. I do believe that the earth was created. I beleive it was a process that required development and change of life forms.
Bottom line, God created the earth and I have no clue how. I don't think my eternal salvation rests on whether or not I can figure out the process.
Big bang, well there currently seems to be some evidence if that happening again I read recently. Evolution, there are a lot of bones out there. I figured God gave me a brain and expects me to use it.

This is true, toxiczen. There are more than two possibilities.
I figured God gave me a brain and expects me to use it.
This is becoming very apparent, and I'm glad, Onyx. Of the few Christians who have made more than 5 posts on this board, two have been blind sheep who 'argue' against all reason and then attack when no one agrees with them, another seemed very intelligent but stopped posting after a short time, and another (young, but thoughtful young lady) pops in occasionally to make a quick comment.
Of these four people, I miss the intelligent one who stopped posting the most. As you can see, Christians are few and far between here, and the ratio of those who've engaged in in-depth, intelligent, religiously-based conversation has only been 1 in 4. You have now made it 2 in 5, and I hope you will stick around.
Edit: I actually forgot about one (that would make 6 now), but I don't really know what to make of her.

Re: Update on Preaching History Teacher.....
Thanks. I've enjoyed this so far, and plan on coming back. I teach school so I can get fairly busy. but yeah, I'll be back.
I've always felt that Christ engaged in intelligent discussion, and as long as a mutual respect is present, I'll participate. We can agree to disagree, without compromising either viewpoint. I hope we will gain a shared understanding of differing viewpoints
