The Criminal Falwell; Dead at 73

I tried to find the image someone made with his head on someone else's nearly naked body wearing diapers for Flint's Hustler magazine in the 70s that caused such a ruckus but it doesn't seem to be available...yet. Maybe a little later today, it will surface and some kind soul will post it here. I bought that magazine just for that political satire (believe me, I assure you, there was no other reason). emoticon

We will be inundated with his smug mug and hear the mean-spirited, self-righteous words that emanated from his mouth for another week or two and then, I hope, we can be allowed to forget him. He is a shameful embarrassment. Remember; according to Falwell, AIDS is God's punishment of queer folk and of a society that tolerates homosexuality. Yes, he left his mark on the marginalized people of our country, like sh*t on toilet paper.

And about 9/11, Falwell said, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.'" http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2006/06/falwell_still_a.html In an interview with CNNs Christiane Amanpour last week, he iterated that he "still stood by that".

This is a man who referred to people who speak Arabic as "people who wear diapers on their head". This is not a death to be mourned but a low-life to be forgotten. No one person should be allowed to do so much harm in the name of God. emoticon

Uh huh, sure. emoticon emoticon Ok, I actually do see how that's plausible. After all, Playboy's pictures are much nicer in quality (or at least they were several years ago when I came across a stack with both), so if you were buying it for the women, you probably would've bought a Playboy instead. emoticon

We will be inundated with his smug mug and hear the mean-spirited, self-righteous words that emanated from his mouth for another week or two...

Yikes! I didn't even think of that! emoticon

...and then, I hope, we can be allowed to forget him.

With the way even conservative Republicans have been distancing themselves from him, there might be some hope for that. Then again, someone else might take his place. emoticon

Yes, he left his mark on the marginalized people of our country, like sh*t on toilet paper.

Yes, he definitely did do a number on this country, all right. emoticon (#2, that is)

And about 9/11, Falwell said, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.'"

1) People such as Falwell with their religious bigotry who try dictating to others how to live their lives while they consider any other branch of religion Satanic helped bring on 9/11. Of course, it didn't help matters that our leaders have been killing Iraqis and others in the middle east since long before the current war, and it was only a matter of time before someone retaliated.

2) There's that term again, gay and lesbian "lifestyle", as though it's the opposite of a heterosexual lifestyle. emoticon So what is a heterosexual lifestyle, then? Heterosexuals eat, sleep, work, pay bills, visit friends and family, watch TV, go online, go to restaurants, go shopping, and even fall in love with a good person who loves them back if they're lucky... So the opposite of a homosexual lifestyle would be...?

3) It was the intention of this country's founding fathers to make this a secular country, so people of all faiths could be free to worship according to their beliefs, or not have to worship at all. The only way to have freedom of religion is to have freedom from religion, otherwise Catholics could give priests a get-out-of-jail-free card for molesting altar boys, Mormons could lower the marrying age to 13, Jews could force all male babies to be circumcized at 8 days old, Muslims could force women to wear veils, or all science textbooks could be replaced with the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Vedas, the Pitaka or even Von Danniken's "Chariots of the Gods?". Anyone who is against the ACLU for their mission of separating church and state as the Constitution prescribes, is against the very foundation of our Constitution, and therefore unpatriotic.

This is a man who referred to people who speak Arabic as "people who wear diapers on their head".

There's that religious bigotry I just mentioned.

This is not a death to be mourned but a low-life to be forgotten. No one person should be allowed to do so much harm in the name of God. emoticon

I usually feel a little something when someone dies, sometimes sadness, sometimes pity, even if I don't really like the person. But in this case, when I saw that headline this evening after work, my first reaction was, "YES!"

Criminal is actually a nice word for Falwell, and if I believed in anti-Christs, he would certainly be one of them, right along with Dubya, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and all the others who put this country and many others in the position we're in right now. If it weren't for Falwell himself, we wouldn't have so many murderous bombings at family planning clinics (if any), and I'm sure all of his hate speech has prompted so many more murders and other hate crimes that I'm not aware of.

I also wonder who those two local "businessmen" were that helped him get tens of millions of dollars of debt "forgiven" aka written off. I can't see anyone but the mob having that kind of influence.

I found these fascinating and fun quotes on another board; their source was not cited and the last one especially as well as the one about Billy Graham make me wary of the authenticity of others of them. I do not take them seriously in their entirety but many of them are consistent with what I know him to have said. Those two, at least, are pretty out there.

-------------------
AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.

And the evangelicals, 80 millions of us in America, everyone knows we're the best friends Israel has, the best friends Jewish people around the world, including America, have.

And, these Islamic fundamentalists, these radical terrorists, these Middle Eastern monsters are committed to destroying the Jewish nation, driving her into the Mediterranean, conquering the world.

Any sex outside of the marriage bond between a man and a woman is violating God's law.

Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America.

But I do know the Scientology Church, like the Moslems, has a pretty hard, strong grip on their constituents.

But I don't believe anyone begins a homosexual.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.

I am saying pornography hurts anyone who reads it, garbage in, garbage out.

I am such a strong admirer and supporter of George W. Bush that if he suggested eliminating the income tax or doubling it, I would vote yes on first blush.

I believe that all of us are born heterosexual, physically created with a plumbing that's heterosexual, and created with the instincts and desires that are basically, fundamentally, heterosexual.

I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I'm going to buy a Suburban next time.

I believe that the people of Israel are the chosen people of God.

I don't think I know a Scientologist except when I see one or two of their actors on the Hollywood screen.

I don't think religious groups should be allowed to apply for federal funds to start new ministries they have not been doing before the funding was available.

I don't want to upset you, but I don't own a private jet. I don't own a model airplane.

I drive a GMC Suburban. And I have since the early '70s.

I either fly commercial like you do or charter, and I go back and forth, but it has been at least 10 years since the ministry had an airplane.

I have deep concerns about the faith-based initiatives - but I am in support.

I think hell's a real place where real people spend a real eternity.

I think pornography is a scourge on society.

I think the Moslem faith teaches hate.

I truly cannot imagine men with men, women with women, doing what they were not physically created to do, without abnormal stress and misbehavior.

If I were doing something that the Bible condemns, I have two choices. I can straighten up my act, or I can somehow distort and twist and change the meaning of the Bible.

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.

In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time- calling upon God.

It is God's planet - and he's taking care of it. And I don't believe that anything we do will raise or lower the temperature one point.

My problem is not with the intentions of the Bush presidency. My problem is where it might go under his successors.

Scientology has a terrible track record of bigotry.

Temptation has been here ever since the Garden of Eden.

Textbooks are Soviet propaganda.
-------------------

Some people are going to agree with some of these things; there's no shame in that. Or is there? What do you think? What about porn; does it harm relationships? What about same sex unions; how far should our society allow / encourage that to go? Are we all born heterosexual?

First... nice to meet you Forestelves!

I couldn't agree with you more. I frequent a Democratic
Forum with over 100,000 members. You should have seen the posts. Many reflected the same point of view as you. People very "happy" that this spewer of hate and bigotry is finally gone. Unfortunately, the indoctrination of his beliefs upon several generations, will undoubtedly have an impact for decades to come.

Hello Bhagwan,

It's nice to meet you, too! I think you're right, too; the influence will last for a very long time and just as bad, there will be others to take his place; terrorists. emoticon

Re: The Criminal Falwell; Dead at 73

I second what you both just said. Unfortunately, the fire doesn't go out just because the one who lit it is gone.

Dave, to answer your questions after that list of quotes... I think it's pretty much proven that we are born with certain preferences, and I think that any couple deserves the same rights as any other couple, regardless of whether they're the same gender or opposites. Also, what about hermaphrodites? Should someone who is born with both male and female reproductive organs not be allowed to marry at all?

I couldn't help but comment on some of the quotes, so here goes (hehe, I'm a posting fool this week, aren't I?)...

But I do know the Scientology Church, like the Moslems, has a pretty hard, strong grip on their constituents.

Like he didn't? emoticon What am I saying? People aren't going to de-program themselves just because he's dead, so his past words still have a strong grip on some people.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

No, ignorant people ask no questions, which is why they're ignorant. Falwell must have confused all Christians with the ones who blindly follow him and others like him.

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

Our misleaders plunder other countries and murder their people; the enemies that were thus created do not need God to help them retaliate. "We" do not deserve it, although we would if we were all like Falwell.

I am saying pornography hurts anyone who reads it, garbage in, garbage out.

I've read some pretty good smut myself, and it's never hurt me. emoticon

But I don't believe anyone begins a homosexual.

Yeah, just keep telling yourself that, while you try to fight off your own attraction to men. emoticon

I believe that all of us are born heterosexual, physically created with a plumbing that's heterosexual, and created with the instincts and desires that are basically, fundamentally, heterosexual.

Belief doesn't require evidence, although there is plenty of evidence that says he's wrong.

I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I'm going to buy a Suburban next time.

Ditto my last remark. Although some of it might be cyclical, we are still contributing substantially.

I believe that the people of Israel are the chosen people of God.

Does that mean he went to hell? Also, should that condone their government's treatment of the Palestinians if it were true?

I don't think religious groups should be allowed to apply for federal funds to start new ministries they have not been doing before the funding was available.

Huh? emoticon
Well I'll agree with half of what he said here. No religious group should receive federal funds period, because that would pave the way for creating a national religion, prevention of which was the whole purpose behind the establishment clause in the first place.

I don't want to upset you, but I don't own a private jet. I don't own a model airplane.

Damn, that just pisses me off. emoticon

I think hell's a real place where real people spend a real eternity.

I almost wish hell was real, but that people only stayed there for as long as it would take to make up for their crimes, with credit for compensation paid while on earth. For example, if someone kills a 20-year-old and spends 50 years in prison, then they can spend an additional 30 years in hell to make it a total of 80 years of incarceration (or however long, depending on how long the victim would have lived had s/he not been murdered), and the conditions in their part of hell should be commensurate with the crime.

Interestingly enough, I don't think the Bible even says anything about hell, otherwise that would be one more barbaric trait given to God in the Bible (instead, this one is only given to him by the church). It does talk about Sheol, which merely means the grave.

I think the Moslem faith teaches hate.

That's the pot calling the kettle black. Falwell's brand of Christianity teaches hate, and I would say people who bomb clinics in the name of God are just as bad as suicide bombers who do it in the name of Allah (yes, the same god), but suicide bombers have so much faith that they are willing to die for it.

I truly cannot imagine men with men, women with women, doing what they were not physically created to do, without abnormal stress and misbehavior.

Maybe he should have given in to his natural feelings instead of trying to fight them. Then he might not have been so stressed, which probably led to his misbehavior.

This poking fun is not a knock on gays, btw, and I actually have a point with this. I think a lot of people who are so verbally anti-gay are actually homophobic – not afraid of gays, but rather, afraid that they themselves are gay, or at least afraid of being perceived as gay. Considering how hung up he was about the topic of homosexuality, I think there's a very good chance that he was attracted to men, whether or not he ever acted on those feelings. If everyone in the world would realize that it's just another preference that people are both with, just like some people prefer little boobs or big butts, then that would take away their reason to fear. I mean come on... people fear that gays will turn their children gay, but those same people know that you can't talk someone into prefering big butts if they don't already prefer them.

In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time- calling upon God.

Sure, take the lazy way out and don't actually try to solve the problem. Great advice. emoticon

Scientology has a terrible track record of bigotry.

Pot, meet kettle.

Textbooks are Soviet propaganda.

LMAO! Well, there is text in the Bible, and the Bible is a book, so does that mean the Bible is Soviet propaganda? emoticon

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.

I think this pretty much sums up the mentality of people like him. But I think they are only trying to build themselves up to feel special by cutting others down, just like anyone else who goes around pointing out other people's supposed flaws.

I don't feel that this requires discussion. I look at the success the U.S. media has by simply ignoring entire topics of debate. It shuts them down and no one hears about them one way or the other. I feel like **** like Falwell should likewise be ignored. What's there to say? He's dead wrong.

LOL! Yep, dead wrong and dead. I would have settled for mute (and maybe blind and deaf if just being mute wouldn't shut him up), but as long as he's no longer spewing hatred at the top of his lungs, it works for the greater good.
