Eating Bush Meat----protected by religious freedom?
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/17/nyregion/17meat.html?_r=3&pagewanted=2&ei=5087&em&en=68699a1f03cfee91&ex=1195448400&oref=slogin
Interesting article. It leaves out the fact that bushmeat being sold, unregulated, in British markets led to the Foot and mouth disease outbreak over there. They now regulate this source of disease. The agency I work with is committed to stopping that from happening here. So far so good, but as more and more immigrants pour into the country (Legally and illegally) its becomes a more daunting challenge.
I think they should find their meats locally from US sources and leave their meat over there in Africa.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Re: Eating Bush Meat----protected by religious freedom?
You're right, Maximus, they didn't really mention how importing food without going through the proper channels is illegal, and for a reason. People shouldn't be allowed to import potentially dangerous foods any more than Rabbis with herpes or aids should be allowed to perform a metzitzah on an infant. Religion or not, the act of doing so could kill someone. Personally I think it's pretty disgusting for even a perfectly healthy Rabbi to do that, but I digress.
Anyway, foods are to be inspected before they come into this country for a reason, and anyone who goes out of their way to sneak potentially dangerous food into this country should receive a penalty for it. The article says that people can obtain bushmeat by legal means, so anyone who is determined and resourceful enough to buy it on the black market should be resourceful enough to figure out how to buy it legally.
The very thought of eating something that could potentially communicate with us through sign language also disgusts me, but that's beside the point. I eat beef and pork, and wouldn't want to eat those if they were imported without passing a proper inspection, either.
