Just for you Lesa

Here you go, a game show you could win hands-down!

Read this.

Wouldn't it be fun to go there and whip their butts, wipe the floor with their sanctimonious asses.

Would the winning atheists get a holiday at a nudist beach, or a week in Hawaii, or a trip to Vegas? I love it. Imagine if the atheists manage to convince all the theocrats.

I saw a link to that at Reason yesterday. Someone there said the show is probably rigged, and I have the same suspicion.

If the game was here in the States, I would certainly try to get on there, though, because I know I would win. I can't believe in any wild claims without evidence, and I think we can all be pretty certain that these game show people aren't going to have any evidence that others don't supposedly have. emoticon

Not only that, but it's possible for a Buddhist monk to already be an atheist! emoticon

I think I might like the show but for a very different reason than you might think. Comparative religion is normally handled by a person of one faith making the attempt to explain how and why someone else believes the way they do. This show, while weighted in favor of the atheist goes beyond that level with people from 5 belief/non-belief systems. The interaction of such a group in a civilized setting sounds like it would be most interesting emoticon

If they are all true to their beliefs or lack thereof, I think I would find it interesting for the same reason you just stated, PR. emoticon

I assume you're familiar with religioustolerance.org? That site is run by people of differing beliefs, as well as at least one atheist. It's not the same as seeing people of differing beliefs/nonbelief interact, but it makes the site interesting and prevents bias, nevertheless.

You might also be interested in this debate between atheist author Sam Harris and Rabbi author David Wolpe. I thought they both did an excellent job keeping it civilized while asserting their differing viewpoints. emoticon

A very good point.
What annoys me about debating with these people is that no matter how calm you are and how logical your points are, they always try to talk over you.
All the nonsensical metaphysical babble just over a logical point the other guy is trying to make. And why are religious people always so defensive and angry?
Surely part of being religious and wanting to appear 'saintly' is also knowing when to shut up and let someone else get a word in.

There are a couple of reasons for them to be defensive and/or angry. One, if their faith is shaky, logic could make it shakier and make them feel threatened or stupid, even if they're not stupid. Two, if you call them stupid or they just think you are, then it's only natural for them to get defensive and/or angry. I don't know anyone who likes being called stupid, religious or not.

The defensive and/or angry ones often say the same thing about us, so I'll state for the record that it isn't defensiveness nor anger in my case, it's frustration. But, I tend to get frustrated when I'm dealing with anyone who doesn't seem to understand logic, and it isn't limited to discussions about religion. For example, I had to make copies today, and someone had thrown away the original that I used last time. So, I had to use the one that was marked "Sample" from the last time I ran that copy job.

Now... Firstly, whoever threw the original away didn't exhibit any logic whatsoever, because the white-out should have clued that person in that it was the original and needed to be filed away for future use. Secondly, the person who I think may have thrown that original out, also told me to cover up the "Sample" stamp when I made my copies, because our boss had told her I would have to do that. My response? "Well, duh! emoticon No, I'm going to copy where it says sample. emoticon"

Back to the video, the rabbi kept claiming that his beliefs made no scientific claims. But they did, in fact, because many of his stated beliefs contradict what we do know via scientific means.

I agree with what you're saying. I get frustrated with anyone who doesn't understand logic, even my poor husband gets it in the ear sometimes, especially when he gets silly about how the television works and the thing he doesn't understand is completely logical.
When it comes to religion, I'm always told that I 'hate God' and I 'hate the bible' and I 'hate Christians'. Not try to reason with that mentality when you say that 'hate' is far too strong a word to use about something I don't believe in, something that is a lie from start to finish, and people I don't really know.
I hate cruelty to children and animals. I hate when men beat their wives, I hate that Muslim women are made to bow to the wills of their men, I hate that the Jews were treated the way they were by the Germans (and other people as well of course). But I don't hate Hitler personally, I hate what he stood for.
Believers don't understand this logic, they just say "you hate God".
And of course nobody likes to be told they're 'stupid' but again, it's the logic that's stupid not the person and then you come up against the same logic as above: "You think my argument is stupid, I don't like being called stupid" then the argument descends in who called who a name.
Totally inane.
