WAR: Justified by Religion
July 7, 2006 edit: Although the article where I obtained these quotes uses the word "by" in its title, "WAR: Justified with Religion" would more adequately describe my own stance on this issue. As PD so succinctly pointed out today, the use of the word "by" seems to imply that religion is the reason for going to war, not a device used by world leaders to gain support for their wars, and my opinion is that it is used as a device to gain support. Without further adieu, I leave the rest of this post as it was before I made this edit...
Adolph Hitler said: "Therefore, I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord's work."
"Christ was the greatest early fighter in the battle against the world enemy, the Jews . . . The work that Christ started but could not finish, I--Adolf Hitler--will conclude."
"I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews, I am fighting for the Lord's work."
"I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so."
Serbia/Croatia
Catholic Croats and Orthodox Christian Serbs slaughtered each other over religion while both slaughtered the Bosnian Muslims over religion.
India
Hindus slaughter Muslims and Sikhs slaughter Hindus over religion.
Pakistan
Sunni Muslims and ****e Muslims slaughter each other over religion.
Algeria
Crusaders for God hack to death thousands and cut off their heads over religion.
Europe - Crusades and Inquisitions
Christianity spread across Europe and butchered or burned Muslims, Jews and Protestants - over religion. "Nulla salus extra ecclesium" ("Outside the Church there is no salvation.") It was "open season" on those who taught any doctrine other than that which the Pope allowed and this made such people enemies of the Catholic Church. How does this sound?... "Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoset" or "Kill them all. God will know His own." answer from Arnaud-Armaury, the Abbot of Citeaux in the 1200's as to how to identify the heretics. All 20,000 residents of the town were slaughtered.
Americas
In the New World, Christian missionaries slaughtered and butchered the Aztecs, Incas and Mayas and destroyed their 'sacred' temples over religion.
Moses
This man was a killing machine! Again, the killing was over religion, directed by God and carried out in God's name.

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
Religion is the root of all evil IMO .
It might bring some good to the masses , but individuals have brought religion a bad name.
Most wars in this war is started in the name of religion

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
War can never be justified IMO in any other way than self defence, the ONLY reason you should have an army is to DEFEND yourselves.

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
I wouldn't say religion is the root of all evil, but it's probably safe to say that it's the root of most evil. Some people commit horrendous crimes without believing in any deity, but nothing has caused as much war and genocide as religion has.
Some political leaders wage war because they believe they're doing God's work; others have different motives and merely use religion as a tool to gain support for their wars. In either case, most wars would not have happened if it weren't for religion.
I agree that war can never be justified except to defend, and that does not include the type of "pre-emptive" war that Bush Jr's administration has waged.

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
Actually, people have been fighting wars over religion long before Christianity ever came about, but Christianity was certainly the culprit behind the Crusades.
Welcome aboard, Beaner! I hope to see you around here often.

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
Religion is just used as a vise because 90% of the world relates to it 1 way or another. So to make it more dramatic they say this is a holy war etc... Personally I believe there is a higher being or entity and we were in heaven or higher place at some point. Then we were sent here(earth) cause we didnt do something right. Yes we are living in HELL! Just look around us

Re: WAR: Justified by Religion
I would say I agree that we're all in Hell, but some people seem to be enjoying the place. Buddists seem to have this belief that Earth is both Heaven and Hell and all places in between, depending on how the person lives in both this life and in past lives. But the saying, "what goes around comes around" isn't exactly true... being nice to everyone never seems to get me anywhere.
You have an interesting idea of us all basically being expelled out of Heaven, though. I don't think I've ever pondered that one or heard anyone else ponder it.
Politicians would sure have to change their tactics if people stopped following religious dogmas. It's no wonder they want to keep as many people believing in them as they possibly can.
