Tiled backgrounds

OK I'm really stumped here and I need some help.
How do I do this, Skokey absolutely has the knack and I need to know what that knack is.
When you have a background wallpaper, and you tile it, the joins show where the background's left and right. and top and bottom edges meet.
What is it you do in photoshop that makes the transition from tile to tile look a little less obvious? I know it's something to do with fixing the edges of the picture but I can't get it right, so please Skokey, or anyone who knows how to make it work nicely, please teach me how to do it for myself so that I don't have to bother you with my constant board changes.

I think Skokey uses Photoshop, but the Gimp has a function that lets you make seamless tiles. Unfortunately, it changes much of the tile itself in the process, so I use another feature they have, which is to "offset" the layer.

Offsetting the layer makes it wrap, so the seams are in the middle of the tile. From there, you can tweak it manually to make the tile seamless.

Skokey will probably have better advice, but maybe that will help some.

Yes, I'm using Photoshop as well.
I take a photo, say 1000 pixels across, when I upload it as a background, it looks great but then at the point where it meets the next 'tile' either right or down, it looks horrible.
Skokey used to do those for me on Anything Goes, i.e. fix it so that my picture looks like the tile just flows, I need to know how to do that in photoshop, I don't want to have to ask Skokey to do it, I've messed around it photoshop but I can't make it 'flow' nicely.

I'm no help here, but I wish the graphics proggy (fireworks) I use would have an option to make something tile seamlessly.. I usually zoom in on the image, and try to crop it just right to make it look tiled, and keep cropping until I get it right.

Photoshop also has what Lesa called the "offset".
I'm not at home right now to check exactly where it is, but I think it's in the Filter Menu. If you find it, there is a box where you enter the horizontal and vertical offset. What you do is enter half the pixel width of the original into the horizontal offset and half the pixel height into the vertical offset. What you will end up with is an image the shows how the four corners of the tile will look like. You'll have a seam line running through the middle of the picture, both horizontal and vertical. Then you do whatever you have to do graphically to make those seams blend from one side to the other. Use all the tricks you have like cut and paste, cloning, fading. This part is more Art than Technical.
Try to stay away from the outside edges of this offset image or you will create new seam lines. If this does happen, then just offset the image again and you will see the new seams and you can fix those.
Sometimes I've gone back and forth a few time to make it totally seamless.

Big Hug for you Skokey.
Thank you it looks perfect now.
Wait for January to see what I've done with one of my UK photos on AG.
