Racist double standard

Hypothetical --

6 white kids beat up a black kid...The white kids get arrested initially for assault and then raised to attempted second-degree murder...

A rally full of white people protesting the charges gather...

Racism ?

Think about it...How would the media cover it...What would the NAACP do...Etc...

Now imagine those 6 white kids are black beating up a white kid and a rally of black people is held...

there still is a double standard at times in the legal system when it comes to black/white issues...
in my humble opinion that's just one aspect of a legal system with MANY flaws...
another one is how the system of trial by jury has moved away from the original idea of the jury would decide guilt or innocence based on the whole case, and even if the person should not be guilty because the law is flawed. and nowadays there instructed to only decide if the strictly defined law was transgressed and leave everything else up to the judge, this perversion of the original concept of a jury only serves to further strengthen the power of the government and weaken the power of the people.

oh and DAMNIT belligerence! you crossed the line! emoticon

Sorry I hadn't looked at this before. Yes there is a double standard.

The incident you refer to is in my neck of the South.

It's a mess. Things are always a mess when the race card is pulled, or the religion card.

Bottom line assault or attempted murder, does the color matter? Should the color matter? IF 6 aliens from another planet come down and beat up an illegal alien in this country, it is still an assault or an attempted murder. Was the law broken? I think so.

Yes, I do think excessive political correctness has a lot to do with reverse discrimination. Would you like to elaborate, Owl, or are your two one-line posts here supposed to be a sneaky way of getting your sig link on to this board? emoticon

We All Live in Jena
    National Call to Action: Please Repost!
    Monday, October 1st, 2007 at Noon, Central Time.

    Artist/ Activist Mos Def along with M1, Talib Kweli, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Sankofa Community Empowerment, Change the Game, the National Hip Hop Political Convention, and student leaders from 50 campuses call for a National Student Walk-Out to rally and show support for the Jena 6, who are being denied their human rights by the Louisiana criminal justice system.

They broke their rights when they ADMITTEDLY assaulted another student...

The Case of the Jena 6

    Last fall, when two Black high school students sat under the "white" tree on their campus,

So named by the black students...The "White" tree is where the white students sat...The black kids sat in bleachers... That would constitute "Racism"

white students responded by hanging nooses from the tree. When Black students protested the light punishment for the students who hung the nooses,

From a news article "A black teacher described seeing both white and black students "playing with [the nooses], pulling on them, jump-swinging from them, and putting their heads through them."...Really shows how concerned the black students were...

District Attorney Reed Walters came to the school and told the students he could "take [their] lives away with a stroke of [his] pen."

It was actually "with one stroke of my pen, I can make your life disappear." which he said after "He warned the students that he could be their friend or their worst enemy," because the students weren't listening...

Racial tension continued to mount in Jena , and the District Attorney did nothing in response to several egregious cases of violence and threats against black students.

That's because most of the cases against the black students were not from students at the school...A fight that happened at a party was between a group of white men ( Not students ) and 5 black students...Another incident involving one of the same black students that was at the party and a white student ( Outside of school )...Charges were brought against the black student because eyewitness statements...Not because of what the black student or white student said...

But when a white student--who had been a vocal supporter of the student’s who hung the nooses, taunted a black student, called several black students "****"

I point out the "White" tree again...Double standard here...

--sustained minor injuries from a school fight,

A doctor treated Barker, who was left unconscious after the attack, at the local hospital. He was released after two hours of treatment and observation for a concussion and an eye that had swollen shut. The emergency physician's record shows that he also had injuries to his face, ears and hand....

Those aren't "Minor" injuries

six black students were charged with second-degree attempted murder. Last month, the first young man to be tried, Mychal Bell, was convicted. He faced up to 22 years in prison for a school fight until the Black people began to organize and his conviction was thrown out because he was tried as an adult. However the DA and the Judge still refuse to set a reasonable bail or to drop the charges in this case and Mychal is still in jail!!

What if these were white kids beating up a black kid ? Honestly ask yourself how you'd respond...How the media would handle it...What everyone would say....

Mos Def is asking students worldwide to assist in the fight against racial injustice and show solidarity for these young people, who have been treated unequally by the law.

If it's black kids it's "Black power" if it's white kids then it's racism...

The prosecution of these young men symbolizes a terrible miscarriage of justice, by punishing students who opposed segregation in their schools and disregarding the threatening acts of others who advocate it.

    As students and activists we say enough is enough! What is happening in Jena is happening all over this country. From Sean Bell to Mychal Bell, the criminal justice system is killing and incarcerating us. We will not be silent!

    Demands
    Judge J.P. Mauffray and District Attorney Reed Walters have engaged in a string of egregious actions, the most recent of which was the denial of bail for Bell on Friday. We call for:

    1. All charges against the Jena 6 be dropped

They ATTACKED a student...White black green whatever...They attacked a student and need to be punished thusly...Despite whatever else happened before or after...

2. The immediate release of Mychal Bell

A request to lower Mychal Bell's $90,000 bond was denied on August 24, 2007, due to his juvenile record. Bell had been put on probation for a battery that occurred December 25, 2005, and he was subsequently convicted of another battery charge and two charges of criminal damage to property while still on probation....

I really want this person walking the streets...

3. The United States Department of Justice to convene an immediate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the arrests and prosecutions of the Jena 6;
    4. Judge Mauffray to be recused from presiding over Bell 's juvenile court hearings or other proceedings;

Why ?

5. The Louisiana Office of Disciplinary Counsel to investigate Reed Walters for unethical and possibly illegal conduct;
    6. The Louisiana Judiciary Commission investigate Judge Mauffray for unethical conduct; and

    7. The Jena School District superintendent to be removed from office.

My two cents...

I have mixed feelings on this one. It is percieved in the black community that whites deal more harshly with blacks accused of crimes than they do with whites overall. I suppose it stems from the days when several hundred of them a year were lynched in the first third of the 20th century. White kids involved in a similar situation probably would have been dealt with by the school rather than by the legal system in the past. Now it seems that schools are letting police handle crimes. Of course with blacks no longer putting up with the **** dealt to them by racist whites and fight back. Thus they are caught now by the new policy to let th epolice handle crimes and don't like it.

I agree completely. I think "political correctness" has got to the point of being completely ridiculous. I am not sure whether I should be referring to my black pen as my "African-American" pen now, and to the dead as "life disabled." Heaven forbid I should offend someone...
