It IS all an Illusion
The Unger Report
By Brian Unger
FEMA Gets 'F' for Fake News Conference
Day to Day, October 29, 2007 · Federal Emergency Management Agency has apologized for holding a news briefing in which its employees posed as reporters asking questions about the government's response to the California wildfires. FEMA claims it was simply trying to provide useful information, but the misstep has angered many people. Among those offended by the move is our resident humorist. He has higher standards for fake news.

Re: It IS all an Illusion
They can't answer any real questions, so they plant their own staffers (in with real reporters so this can be reported, I assume?) and call on these staffers to ask questions that are more favorable to FEMA than anyone looking for real answers would ask. Why doesn't this surprise me? Somehow I suspect this "useful information" they were feeding the public is far from the truth.

Re: It IS all an Illusion
Actually, according to most independent reports, FEMA has done rather well in southern California. This fake press conference kinda ruined it though. I think someone's head rolled on this one.

Re: It IS all an Illusion
Philbin was scheduled to become director of public affairs for the director of national intelligence -- a job National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell said Philbin will not be doing.
It was not immediately clear whether Philbin offered his resignation or was fired just as he was set to begin the job.
"Their actions represented a breach of ethical practice that tore at the credibility of FEMA, the deputy administrator and that of their own office," Paulison wrote in his memo. "I do not condone their actions, no matter how well-intended, and have conveyed my displeasure directly through formal reprimand and admonishment to those involved."

Re: It IS all an Illusion
I don't get it. If they were doing a good job, then why the fake reporters?
I honestly don't know if they handled the fires well or not, but this makes it look like they didn't. Where did these independent reports come from? Could it be that firefighters in that area knew what they were doing and FEMA was taking the credit?

Re: It IS all an Illusion
Yep, it was a stupid mistake and a head did deserve to roll. Apparently there are no complaints on their getting supplies and money to the area for the victims of the fire. The did/are doing their part smoothly and efficiently, which comes AFTER the fires are put out by the firemen. That's because Bush was forced to put someone in charge who actually knew what they were doing after the Katrina fiasco
