5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism

Dr King?!
perhaps it is true, but i dont think it takes away from his overall message... (IMHO)

Of course not. And he got the message across, which is really all that counts.

Re: 5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism
As a writer, I take plagiarism very seriously. It always upsets me. Writing is tough, lonely work and having someone snatch your intellectual property sucks.
I've had it done by someone I knew.

Don't you think plagiarizing reflects a person's moral character? Isn't a person's moral base important?

Re: 5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism
I absolutely think that plagiarism is a question of morality. I would be murderous if someone stole something I'd written and didn't cite me. Not that anything i write is mind-shattering but still I put a lot of thought and care into my writing, I am perfectly within my rights to scream if someone copies it.
Our university used to make us sign our work that it was original and anything that wasn't properly marked with sources was given a zero and if plagiarised, the culprit would be expelled without discussion.

Re: 5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism
Welcome to Illusia, Ivan.
I can't imagine taking someone else's work and trying to pass it off as my own. What's so hard about saying, "As so and so once said..." before quoting them? Even if you don't remember who said it and it comes off the top of your head during a speech, at least let people know you're not the first person to say it. In the case of writing something, whether a book or article, etc., there is always time to find out who said it and cite them properly.

Re: 5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism
Thanks for the welcome, LG!
I have to admit I was quite disheartened to read a year or so ago that John F. Kennedy used a ghost writer to write PROFILES IN COURAGE, the book Kennedy won a Pulitzer for.

It's a pleasure to have you here, Ivan.
Why anyone would want to be a ghost writer is beyond me. Yeah, maybe they get paid good money or something, but how would one put something like that on their resume?

Re: 5 historic figures who built their careers on plagiarism
I agree, if you feel that your own writing skills aren't good enough and you're famous, then get someone to help you, but people appreciate reading the real words of real people, even if they're not perfect grammatically.
I always insist that people give me sources when they quote something they've read when they post on my sites, it doesn't hurt to say "this from CNN" or the NYT etc. Even if you say that you found it somewhere and put it in quotes, you should say where you found it.
And Ivan welcome from me too. I'm the chatterbox on this board. I always have something to say about everything.

In "The Real Frank Zappa Book", Frank explains to comedic effect, how and why he used a professional writer. Check it out here.
