Birthers
The hard core Birthers are really something. We have one that works for us down in Jersey but only comes up here about 4 or 5 times a year.
Today, he was going around telling anyone who would listen about a hoax article that was written on April 1, 2009, supposedly by the Associated Press. The thing is, he doesn't know it's a hoax that was designed to see how gullible idiots like him are. They repeat whatever they hear as if it's true without checking to see whether it is or not. I didn't bother telling him. I'd rather that he find out at some important meeting or social gathering where someone will reduce him to the mindless idiot he is.

Re: Birthers
Some people will believe anything they read. If he really wasn't a natural-born citizen, the government would have known about it, and he never would have been able to take office. Our last administration would have made sure of that. Actually, they might have waited until it was too late in the race for another dem to beat McCain, but they certainly would have outed him before the vote.
It's that simple.

Re: Birthers
I love how I discovered FactCheck! I bet Cheney was regretting that one for a long time!
Queeny, somehow I don't think the Bush administration was in office while your husband was in the Navy, and security was probably a little more relaxed back then. Probably a little too much so.

Re: Birthers
After hearing about Petal's experience last year when she was locked up because of a glitch in the system that lost her details or something and the way they treated her, I was very put off visiting.
And seeing how paranoid the British immigration people are at their airports it's ridiculous. They made us unpack my husband's hand luggage three times because the video camera was setting off their alarms. The claimed he had a computer in his bag, even after they saw that it was a camera in a camera bag.
And the body searching it's embarrassing.
But then I suppose if you're expecting terrorists to visit you have to be mean to everybody.

Re: Birthers
I was actually quite surprised when I flew to Seattle from O'Hare in June of 2002, when so many people here were still expecting more terrorist attacks. They made us take off our shoes and put them through the metal detector along with our carry-ons, but the security checks moved along quite efficiently and I didn't see anyone getting hassled.

Re: Birthers
I'll ask Petal to come over and tell you about her experience, I'm not sure which airport it was but she's been to the US several times so she would be able to compare.
Coming from a very friendly environment where the security people make jokes while they move you along, it was a little disconcerting to get to Heathrow and be met by people who didn't smile and who shouted about where to start a new line for a hand luggage check.
The people doing the passport checks as well, they didn't say welcome or anything like that, just "why are you here" and "look into the eyepiece" and that was it.
My John said the same thing about landing at Atlanta, he was a little frightened when he asked for directions and the person he asked gave him some surly reply about how to find an information counter.
I like the way the terminal at Heathrow - Terminal 5 the British Airways one, has clear instructions all around the building, like on motorways, excellent. And then we went on a 'Star Wars' like underground speed train across the concourse to the airplane that was berthed too far for us to walk. That was fun, I looked like such a neophyte idiot because I thought it was cute and said so, "woohoo Star Trek has arrived!" or something along those lines and the English people who all had sticks up the proverbial looked at me as though I'd just crept out of the Dark Ages!
It was very cool being transported like that, instead've the buses we use at our airports. Nut no one encouraged me to enjoy it except my husband who was also wide-eyed but knew how to hide it!

Re: Birthers
It sounds like he had quite a career, Queeny.
MO, it sounds like Heathrow values efficiency, which I like. They could be a little more friendly to visitors, though. If they have to ask why you're there, they could say, "Welcome. What is the purpose of your visit?" Instead of just, "Look into the eyepiece," it would be much nicer for them to say, "I need you to look into the eyepiece, please."
I wouldn't change the fact that they shout, though. Shouting can be an efficient way to keep people informed, and I even do it myself at work. It just seems silly to walk across a large room to tell someone that a job is due in two hours, so I hold it up in the air, get their attention, then yell, "Hot job!"
