Talkorigins.org has a lot of information on our origins. I haven't actually read much of their site yet, but I've seen people (laypeople and professionals alike) reference it a lot.
This search mentions a lot of the dating methods in the titles themselves.
Then there is also the geologic column.
For evolutionary theory, try http://richarddawkins.net.

You're right, they're very good at putting it in layman's terms. I rarely see it simplified like that, which is one reason why I think it's so easy for the con artists at Discovery Institute and others to misrepresent the theories surrounding the fact of evolution.
