Re: 5 scientific theories that will make your head explode!
Thanks for sharing that. Now I have a whole bunch of Saturday morning things to do but I am going to copy the whole thing into a document I can cut up and paste about and I'll come back later, sometime over the weekend with comments. Hope that's ok.
I think LG unleashed a monster by inviting me to this little corner of the Runboard universe.

I love this part:
Right now, on your computer screen, are approximately 10,000 galaxies.
Each of those galaxies contains anywhere from ten million to one trillion stars.
The average star is roughly a million times the size of Earth.
And yet, with all that junk, the Universe is more than 90 percent empty space.
All of that, in this tiny photo. A photo that took 400 orbits and 800 exposures to take.
And the kicker? The photo covers one thirteen-millionth of the entire night sky.
And yet, Earth and humans are supposedly special in the overall scheme of things.

Re: 5 scientific theories that will make your head explode!
I'm always amazed at the idea that in the vast universe, some supposedly all-powerful, all knowing being who created himself, also created one planet with people who are his clones, the purpose of this being that they spend their lives on the planet killing each other so that they can then move to a place that no one has ever found in the vast universe to live for eternity.
How inane in that? Why not clone yourself and then let your clones live on the planet you created for them for all eternity anyway? Why make them die?

Re: 5 scientific theories that will make your head explode!
My medium sized scientific brain was wondering why cosmologists are puzzled that they find that the further out they look, the Universe is expanding faster and faster. My confusion is based on the fact that as you look further out, you are actually looking back in time. The Galaxy you see 10 billion light years from earth is what it looked like 10 billion years ago. That Galaxy might not even be there any more. From what I know of small bangs, it seems that a Big Bang should behave the same way. It's very fast at the beginning and the debris slows down as time progresses. The rapid expansion of the Universe at great distances just seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I wrote to a cosmologist about it with dreams of winning a Nobel Prize, , and he actually wrote back to me and told me how flawed my thinking was but he still didn't explain it in a way for this non-professional to say, "Oh yeah! Duh." I'll continue to try to understand this phenomenon and I won't just shrug my shoulders and say, "God's doing it".

Skokey, is the expansion really slowing down, or is it speeding up? Nasa.gov, scroll down to "Dark Energy" heading. Just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder, huh?
Mo, you might get a kick out of this. Then again, there are so many bogus claims out there like that one by people who try to sound scientific when they have no idea what they're even talking about.

Yes, it's speeding up and I wasn't disputing that. It just seemed obvious to me from the way I read it explained. I was wondering why the brilliant minds were puzzled. I guess it's speeding up everywhere and not just the further out you go, which is how I first understood it.

Yes I saw that Skokey on a site I looked at this morning too. I don't pretend to understand it but I seem to recall from the series The Universe on the History Channel that it is inevitable that the earth will die just the same way that other planets have and that just as it began at some point in the great scheme of things, it will end as well, but they did say that it probably wouldn't be populated anymore because it would be too hot.
