On the front lines of teaching evolution

Interesting NY Times article on a teacher in Florida and his style of bringing evolution to his students. It also goes into a discussion of what is happening around the country regarding this important issue. I think much of the confusion in the public's mind stems from the press trying to present evolution and creationism as equal theories. Nothing could be further from the truth. Evolution has hundreds of years of observations, fossils, experiments and amyriad of other facts to support it. Creationism has a book written during the Iron Age by people whose life span was 30 years if they were lucky. The two theories are so far from equal, its like comparing a mud hut to the bird's nest stadium in Beijing.

I love this quote from the NY Times aritcle:

In a stormy public comment session, Mr. Campbell defended his fellow writers against complaints that they had not included alternative explanations for life’s diversity, like intelligent design.

His attempt at humor came with an edge:

“We also failed to include astrology, alchemy and the concept of the moon being made of green cheese,” he said. “Because those aren’t science, either.”

That is a very interesting article. Thank you for sharing it.
I didn't quite understand the ape/human relationship until I was quite old and learned that we didn't evolve from them but that they and we descended from the same ancestor and then it made sense. And proof that we are evolving? I look at the pinkie toes of children today, look how small the nails are in comparison to the nails on your grandparents' pinkie toes. In just three generations, because we mostly wear shoes all the time, the nail on our littlest toe is disappearing. I think that in another 100 years it won't exist anymore. This is something I always look at when I am shown a newborn baby, and I point it out to the parents who usually look at me and shake their heads - she's off on her soapbox again.
