Characters
There are 4 character archetypes:- rogue, soldier, priest, mage.
As far as the main site says there are 12 classes:- assassin, barbarian, bear shaman, conqueror, dark templar, demonologist, guardian, herald of xotli, necromancer, priest of mitra, ranger, tempest of set.
You start as that actual class, the similarity between characters is with the 'talent tree' where you have 2 class trees and 1 archetype tree (ish).
To put the classes in WoW-ish terms (or at least one line easier to understand generalisations)
assassin - rogue
barbarian - combat rogue (strangely enough)
bear shaman - druid
conqueror - paladin-ish (group buffing warrior)
dark templar - warrior mage (sounds like the new death knight is meant to be)
demonologist - mage (with one pet afaik)
guardian - warrior tank
herald of xotli - warrior mage (self power-up)
necromancer - warlock (multi pet afaik)
priest of mitra - healing priest (holy damage)
ranger - hunter
tempest of set - healing priest (unholy damage)
