Spell weaving - its impressive

I believe as a caster you can 'weave' spells.

I think it works like melee combos - i.e. you can do certain spells in a row in correct time to make larger more impressive versions of them.

not knowing much about the game they look very pretty but what do they do? are they a form of channled party buff?
