Recent Fantsia interview. Excerpt and link provided below.
CNN's TJ Holmes finally talks with American Idol Fantasia, who is touring again in The Color Purple
August 15, 12:56 PMAtlanta African-American Pop Culture ExaminerRonda Racha
CNN's TJ Holmes with Fantasia in DC/Courtesy, CNNAfter a few days of teasing audiences about sitting down with Fantasia Barrino in Washington, D.C. about her return to Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple (www.thecolorpurple.com), then running at the Kennedy Center, Atlanta-based TJ Holmes's interview with her finally aired this morning on CNN. Fantasia, as she's popularly known, first began playing Celie to rave reviews in 2007 but dropped out under then mysterious circumstances in 2008.
When The Color Purple hit Atlanta's Fox Theatre last July just in time for the National Black Arts Festival, www.nbaf.org, audiences enjoyed the show despite Fantasia, a then frequent sight on the Atlanta scene, not being present. That will be rectified when the show returns September 15-September 27. Holmes spoke to Fantasia about the tumors on her vocal cords that almost permanently derailed her strides to truly become an "American Idol".
"I didn't understand why I was so tired," Fantasia told Holmes. "I would go from The Color Purple to go get IVs because they would say I was dehydrated but it wasn't that. I had two tumors that [were] draining everything in me."
After having surgery, Fantasia got a wake-up call. "It was a trying time for me, let's just say that, because, after I had the surgery, I couldn't speak for six weeks," she shared. "Can't work for six weeks, and I work, I have to pay my bills and I have to take care of my whole family," she emphasized.
The realization that she could possibly never sing again prompted the single mother, whose daughter is raised primarily by her mother, to rededicate herself to her education. "It's hard," she admitted to Holmes. "It's been a long time. I dropped out of school in the ninth grade but I'm doing it because I have a eight-year-old daughter and a sixteen-year-old brother and I'm so hard on them about school. So hard on them. How about this, watch your sister go, I'm getting my diploma and I'm still cool."
As the Atlanta show run draws nearer, there will more information about Fantasia so stay tuned.
