Babyface, Fantasia to play ISU

Three groups booked to perform post-Homecoming concert
Harold BosstickIssue date: 9/19/09 Section: Campus

In addition to the usual football and bar-crawling, this Homecoming will have a new attraction-a concert featuring performances from three R&B groups.

The show will open with a performance by trio After 7, followed by a solo performance from the group member Kevon Edmonds. Third-season American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino will take the stage next, and the show will finish up with a performance by singer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

"We are very excited to have artists of this caliber coming to Terre Haute," said Jennifer Cook, Hulman Center assistant director of business and marketing.

Originally from Indianapolis, Babyface is renown in the music industry for his work as both a performer and a producer. The 10-time Grammy winner has recorded 11 solo albums.

In addition to American Idol fame, Fantasia has had post-Idol success with singles such as "I Believe."

After 7, a three-man group featuring two of Babyface's brothers, is best known for '90s works such as "Can't Stop" and "Heat of the Moment."

Cook said ISU has had Homecoming concerts before, but none in the past few years.

"It's a great way to cap off Saturday," she said. "We want to make it a tradition."

Cook said this performance, like the Skillet concert last spring, is part of an effort to bring more performers to campus.

"We are working hard to bring concerts to Hulman Center," she said. "Hopefully, this is just the beginning."

Cook said a large turnout for this show would help increase the likelihood a second, and possibly third, campus concert in the spring.

"We want to get people to realize there are things to do on the campus of Indiana State," she said.

Freshman Erika Koesters echoed this very point.

"Sure, I would go," she said. "There's nothing else to do around here."

Sophomore communication major Clarissa Tibbs and sophomore psychology major Kristi Duckett were more enthusiastic.

"Fantasia, she can sing … We got to get our tickets early," Tibbs said.

Duckett agreed: "I heard the ticket prices are reasonable. Ten dollars is nothing."

Brandon Allen, a junior marketing major, while not a fan of any of the performing groups, said he still liked the idea of a Homecoming concert.

"I think it's a good idea," he said. "I don't know any of those names, but I'm not saying I wouldn't be interested in seeing something."

Box:

Oct. 24, 7 p.m.

Tickets range from $10-35 for students and $20-50 for non-students.

(Discounted tickets must be purchased through the Hulman Center ticket office. Full-price tickets can also be purchased through ticketmaster.)

Tickets go on sale next Friday
